Hi folks it's been a while
I'm now set on a Hawirch Ferry with a bike in the back od Ray Goddard's van...
Sadly not my H2
I spent Monday, Tuesday and most of Wednesday working on my H2, now if it was a standard bike, wheels etc would just slot straight in, however I have a pair of KH250 wheels with alloy rims on mine, this brings all sorts of connotations up, I've had special spacers made up to accommodate them.
One of the main issues was that I had the standard mudgaurd fitted, which with the 18" front wheel looks stupid.
Now I thought I'd found an 18" front mudguard that slotted straight in. However on fitting it I couldn't get the front wheel to line up.
After a lot of measuring and standing back, the front mounting bracket was slightly out of shape and too small for the fork gap.
So I thought I wonder if a KH has the same spacing for mounting the mudgaurd.
Into the garage out with my KH400 front wheel and yes the spacing was the same, off with the front mudguard and offer it up to my H2, it's far too narrow, I did think about fitting it with some washers, but it was a lot of faf so I put my 400 front end back together again ( before I loose some components) and switched back to my original H2 guard.
Everything just fell into place, it looks stupid but works perfectly.
My H2 is fitted with a set of KH500 forks, the hub for the KH Series is the same part number for the KH500.
When I worked in a bike breakers I was forever measuring stuff to see what would bolt on where, I discovered that GPZ900 calipers bolt straight onto KH500 forks also Z650 drilled and vented discs bolt straight onto a KH hub.
The only issue is the pads overlap slightly and don't use all of the disc, simple solution is to remove some of the pad material and vola a bolt on brake upgrade, I found 2 discs too much, so dropped down to one.
Onto the back end, now the issue I found with the back end was that the KH drum is cable operated and the H2 isn't, when marrying the two together the back brake was useless, with a bit of research I found that a Z400 shared the same size brake shoes and Hub as the KH, because it was a rod operated rear brake the drum had a drop down v to mount the brake stop rod (?) onto, I bit the bullet and bought a second hand brake plate and get my mate to machine up a spacer. Tuesday was the first time I mounted everything. It went together perfectly, at last I had a working rear brake.
Wednesday the bike is coming together really nicely, shiny bolts everywhere, I come to put the throttle cable on and notice that the oil line is slightly frayed, I pull 10 cables out of a tube that I keep in, all of which are 500s.. so I put it on anyway and the cam on the pulley doesn't return, I guess I need a new cable then, I'll soldier on anyway.
I have had a new Doremi wiring harness for around 15 years, so I fit this, and wire up the rest of the electrics for the engine, next I go to get the chain that I bought during lockdown., only to find that there's no split link.
I then turn my attention to the airbox and fitted a new foam filter, the dished top of the airbox is a bit crispy, so I use a washer to secure it, 2 turns with a screwdriver and a nice crack forms across the plate... Bummer, well that's that, I call it a day on the H2
