Glad to hear Iain's making good progress. Only found out yesterday that one of my good friends is in intensive care on a ventilator. Known him since school, took my bike test on his GP100. 53, slim, fit as a fiddle, no underlying health concerns. Very worrying.

Sorry, to hear that James. I hope he can fight and pull through.
This virus/desease can get any of us...........

11.46AM yesterday

Hi just spoken to the nurse.
She said he’s doing really well.
His oxygen is down to 24-28%!
The drs are discussing if he’s staying there for one more day or going to a ward.
They will let me know.
The ward will be specially for people that have been covid19 positive.
They are specially trained and will monitor him closely and he will also start rehab with them.
She said he still very muddled and quite spaced out which they expect for a bit longer due to the amount of meds he’s been on.
She also said when he’s home he will most likely suffer nightmares for a while.
She said he will be in hospital for a bit yet and will need follow up when home particularly rehab due to the amount of weight/ muscle and generally weakness he’s lost.
Overall though they are really pleased with him.
They’ve laminated the pictures I’ve sent and given them to him. Xx

18.52PM yesterday

Hi I have rung intensive care And Iain has been moved to the ward.
He is on A3 and was moved recently.
I have spoken to the nurse (I’m presuming the doctors don’t update on this ward).
She said he managed the move ok. He’s been seen by the dietician and SALT ( Speech and language therapy )to make sure he can swallow and he managed a cup of water.
He has then had vegetable soup, ice cream and a cup of tea with no coughing and tolerated it all.
She said he is responding to commands and answering questions but not initiating conversation yet.
She said he remains a little bit muddled.
She said he is now on 1 litre of oxygen which is about 24% so close to
Room air.
She also said he keeps picking the pictures of me and Callum up and looking at them .
So another good day with baby steps still. Xx

10.30PM yesterday

The nurse said Iain kept his food down , was stable and was asleep.

8.12AM today.

Hi he had a stable evening and night.
She said he’s managed to keep tolerate the food.
His oxygen is still at 24%.
When I rang last night she said he’s still a bit confused.
They ask him a question and he’s blank and then they tell him and he goes yeah I know!! .
She said that morning he was still asleep and had slept through so hopefully another ok day for him xx



So Iain is Out of ICU last night but two weeks on a ventilator has taken its toll.Long continued recovery ahead.
The body has closed down for two weeks and apart from still fighting the virus ( in the lungs) the body has to restart .
Could take up to a year to get fully recovered and lots of scenarios
There is a possibility He may never work again?
We don’t know what’s ahead at the moment but he is still alive
So, the things we need for him to leave the ward would be in this order
1- not require oxygen
2- talk normally
3- eat and drink normally
4- mobilise’
They did also say not all his recovery has to take place in hospital - they will send him home if he is strong enough to continue the recovery there
The rehab team will continue his recovery at hone too.

That’s not a baby step that’s huge. Amazing’!
In terms of getting home, Mo said it really varies - he’s seen people be ready in less than a week, and at the top end take up to a month.

amazing news, he's a fighter

That is QUITE the emotional read this morning, but definitely, definitely in a good way.
I hope the improvement accelerates now, and into the happy future that seemed quite uncertain for so long.

11.31AM yesterday

Hey just spoken to the nurse.
Iain doing well.
He’s got up into a chair.
He’s helped wash himself.
He’s managed cereal for breakfast.
They are also trying him off the oxygen.
His SATS are 94% at the moment which she said is ok for COVID19 patients.
She said they try them off oxygen with recovery as being on oxygen long term can be detrimental. She’s monitoring and if it dips she will put him back on.
They are getting physio to review as they want him to start mobilizing!
They have said if he needs prolonged recovery/ rehab he may go to the nightingale hospital in Manchester but he’s doing well so far.
He’s still muddled but improved.
Annoyingly they have lost his belongings including his phone.
She is going to try and locate Them today as he’s been asking to talk to me xx

15.58 PM yesterday
Sarah sent this to Julie, me and her two brothers only.
(Ive asked her permission to put it on this group)

I’ve not put this on the whats app group as I don’t want Iain getting upset that he’s muddled xx
(Now he has his phone he is able to go back and read all the family texts since he went into hospital).
Iain has just rung me .
He’s ok a bit muddled said to me yeah I’m still remembering the night you were evacuated cause of the fire!!
So he’s not quite with it yet.
He said they’ve found his phone but lost charger etc so he’s turning phone off most of the day to preserve the battery.
He said physio came and he’s done 50 steps with a walking frame and managed it but is knackered.
He also managed stew and mash for lunch.
I’ll ring nurse later and get more update.
He’s managing ok off oxygen so far and said he wants to get out of there! I’ve told him Not to rush . Xx

19.02PM yesterday

Hi I’ve spoken to the nurse and he’s had a really good day.
He’s tolerating soft diet.
He managed to remain off oxygen with decent SATS.
He’s managed some physio.
He managed an hour out of bed before he had to rest.
The ICU drs have been to see him and are so pleased with his progress.
He’s still muddled but improving.
She’s said his other belongings appear to have gone AWOL but did say we can drop something to hospital and they will collect it.
So I’ll sort that.
I asked if they would retest re Covid prior to discharge.
She said they don’t but she’s aware of Callum and his conditions and she is going to liaise with drs and infection control as to whether if may be advisable to reswab.
So another positive step forward xx

7.51AM this morning.
The nurse said Iain was ok overnight.
Said his oxygen levels were ok and he slept ok but she said this yesterday and when I spoke to Iain he hadn’t slept good so I’ll see what the day nurse says later.
She said he’s a bit less muddled as well xx


Massive progress yesterday.
I cant believe how well Iain has come on in 48 hours.
He knows he has been seriously ill but remembers virtually nothing about it.
He remembers something going into his neck and thats it!
No memory of the ambulance etc.
He is determined to get well enough to get home ASAP.

8.35AM today
Iain has just texted Sarah.
Morning, hope you too are Ok. I did not sleep to well again.

lets hope he can go home soon that would be amazing. Its a good job he can't remember the bad bits.
