They are con merchants what right have they to assume that you will automatically renew at the end of the year especially insurance companies because they normally pump the renewal price up as well so you pay well over the odds - thats ok? i think not
Sky is another one at this time of year, you get a phone call asking if you want to upgrade to films etc for the next 3 months over the christmas period for £5.00 a month - yes i like that you think - but you have got to cancel it before the 3months otherwise they automatically put you on full subscribtion at £48.00 per month F**king con merchants all of them

It`s called legalised theft, NO way should peoples credit cards or bank accounts be tapered with without their permission. Majority of people do not read the small print and that`s why they pull this underhanded thieving trick.
Time there was a law against this type of practice.

But clearly you all know the score with auto renewals, you are all grumbling about them so you do know...so when it inevitably happens to you because you did nothing to stop it happening, it is 100% YOUR fault for not cancelling it. (Eric, you give permission to renew when you sign up in the first place, it's in the small print that the purchaser fails to read)

It's not hard to stop it happening, one email or phone call to the provider and either login to your bank or call in to stop the direct debit going out - job covered.

The point is that whether technically right or wrong it's an underhand tactic that is deliberately put into the small print because they really don't want you to read it. They want you to be lazy, they want you to be forgetful, they want you to overlook it. Yes we should all be on out toes looking out for this kind of tactic but to quite honest many of us can't be arsed and just want a simple life. Too much to ask? Probably so in this day and age.

I fully agree. Its con artist tactics hoping to catc out the old and not so sharp people. Agreeing with them that WE are in the wrong frankly makes me vomit. Unless of course, the people who say we are wrong are pulling this stunt themselves.

I reckon we ought to put club membership on this auto renewing direct debit as that would save losing so many members each year at renewal time

Hmm. i have read this post and i can see both sides.

Personally i like the magazine as it appears to be bang on target for my customers, and yes i do advertise in it. The era of bikes appears to be mainly late sixties to early eighties japanese......which suits me fine.
yes sure some of the articles are crap, but for me, it floats my boat. The other classic mags are out of my period and mainly feature british bikes ,which i have no interest in at all.

As for the renewal thing, well it is a direct debit mandate, which authorises them to do that. If you just want to buy it for one year they will happily do that for you too. You can buy a one years subscription as a xmas pressie, which a lot of people do.

Again just speaking from my own experience i like the auto renewal feature, it saves hassle. For instance my AA cover is on auto renewal. Imagine how you would feel if you broke down in the middle of nowhere (which i have done several times ) and you rang the AA, and they said, "sorry but your membership expired 3 weeks ago. we wrote to you several times ,but we got no response"
that would be typical me, as i tend to file anything that looks like junk mail in the bin without even opening it, so i could easily see me doing that.

but hey thats just me ,and yes i am lazy, but anything that gives me one less thing to remember is ok by me.
