My first triple was the H1a. Over 30 years ago now, a group of us rode together included a mint brown H2, kawasaki twin 750 my 1980 hawk 400, a Ninja zx10 when they first came out, and a 1975 cb750 k. One day Bob, calls me out to go look at an H1 with him.
Just so happened to be 2 blocks down from where I worked. There it was sitting out in front of the house next to a 60 something Triumph Bonneville. I never paid any attention. Bob was interested and we made attempts to get it started and Bob couldn't make a deal that he was happy with. I think the guy wanted $200 or $250. With it not running, Bob said no thanks.
Well, I always loved that color blue so I went back. I offered the guy $75 and he took it ! I had no idea how to fix it but for $75 I was game for trying. OH, the Triumph was a pile of rust that I still wish, today, I would have gotten. After fiddling around with the H1 for a while I somehow figured out the rotor was not aligned properly. I realigned it and kicked to life ! That feeling of the first startup is Amazing !
It was actually running and running pretty good ! Ok, time for a little test ride down the block. Easy does it, part throttle. Never rode my friends H2 so I hadn't any idea what was about to happen. As I proceeded down the block the revs hit the power band and the front end decided it was free of gravity. Oh! I was hooked. I went on to ride this quite a bit that year and after some time it quit and I decided to rebuild. Bob did get a triple, an H2. Painted a beautiful purple. My H1a is still waiting the completion of the rebuild. Life gets in the way. Maybe 20 years ago a friend of a friend who knew I had the H1 gifted me another H1. So, now, nearing retirement, I'm gearing up for the H1 projects. I watch Allen Millyard's builds and get excited to get back into it.
