Good to have some positive if qualified news.
This has become the first thing I check at work (we produce packaging for the food industry) and going by the number of views I'm not alone in doing so.
A couple of weeks ago I thought I was bit paranoid when I was wiping down machine controls and the office keyboards before the others arrived at work, not so having seen your experience.
We have reduced numbers on each shift but it's still not always easy doing the social distancing bit so I have used your story a few times to explain why it is important.

for those interested there was a very good programmes on C4 I think Thurday last at 8pm,

It showed how to basically 'decontaminate' everything that is likely to come into your house from post to shopping to your shoes (depending on where youve walked) with my experience of working in the Nuclear Industry we are/were doing about 90% of what they suggested, but overall a good informative watch

It really is uplifting to hear that Iain is more than holding his own here, NHS trials are great,(my wife took part in one when she had BC) the worst that can happen is he will get better attention and a more watchfull eye over him.

Malc, the latest news is uplifting and positive although we all understand that there is some way to go before Iain is out of the woods

This part of the report gave me a feeling of positivity .... lets hope we are now on the road to full recovery

Sorry it’s late but had to share my excitement. I’ve just rung. Iain is still managing without the paralytic drug so over 12 hours now. They have also turned his ventilation right down and he showed he could breathe on his own! They only did this for a small while and they’ve now put it back up to let him rest but all
good

Texts from Sarah yesterday to our whatsapp group.
and this mornings update.

7.15 AM yesterday
Morning we’ve had a really good night. I rang at 11 and they said he was managing well without the drug and his oxygen requirement was the same. She said they had weaned his pressures totally down and he had breathed for himself! And they had our then back up now to give him a rest overnight but it was very good. I’m rung before handover this morning and they said he’s had a really good night. His oxygen is at 50% and he’s stable. He’s not needed the paralytic drug and the gases they’ve done and showing improvement. The nurse looking after him has looked after him the last two nights and said it’s like looking at a totally different patient! She said don’t get too ahead of yourself but he has had a really good night. Come on Iain you can do this! Xx

11.28AM
Just rang. He remains the same and very stable. The drs and physio have reviwed and are pleased with his progress. They are going to try and start reducing his sedation xx

18.39PM
Had a quick update from the nurse. Think dr must be very busy today. They’ve reduced his sedation and his ventilation and he’s managing well. She said they’ve also reduced his oxygen though she wasn’t sure to what. She said they will probably put him back up at night to give him a rest but she said he’s had a ‘good progressive day’ still baby steps but he’s doing really well. I asked about the temperature and she said nothing had been reported and they wouldn’t have started reduce him if they felt he wasn’t stable enough. If I hear from the dr I’ll update xx

22.58PM
Just a quick update. Iain has been put on a lower setting where the ventilator is still helping him but he is doing part of the breathing himself! He’s still sedated and stable and she said if he starts to tire we will put it back up but he’s a managed quite a while now!

8.55AM today
Iain was stable overnight and they’ve managed to reduce his ventilation right down so he’s doing a lot of the breathing himself . The HCA wasn’t really sure when I rang before as the nurses were all in PPE and couldn’t talk but they said he’s stable and the same, which is good. Im not sure if they’ve upped the ventilator to give him a break or not xx

WOW....great news Malc. Recovery with this virus seems to be up and down and then one way or the other. It would seem that Iain has gone the right way . Our thoughts are with all of you mate........am sure he will pull thru this amigo

Yesterdays updates and todays first update from sarah

Yesterday 11.25AM

Hi I’ve spoken to nurse.
She said he had a very good night.
He’s requiring no support on the ventilator so they are stopping his sedation today.
The Dr feels he’s not ready to come completely off the ventilator yet and doesn’t want to rush him but they want to see how he responds.
If he gets distressed they will up his sedation.
He’s still requiring 55% oxygen but she said this could probably come down they’ve just not wanted to push him too much.
If he manages ok they will restart sedation later at a lower level and plan to remove the tube over the next day or so.
She said not to panic if he doesn’t manage this as it’s a relatively small set back and they have to try him. Xx

13.42PM

Hi just been contacted by consultant and research team.
Iain has been pushed to try the anti malaria drug Hydroxychloroquine.
They will start it tonight.
Only known side effect are with patients with existing cardiac problems.
The consultant has fully reviewed his reports and said Iain is not at risk so will be safe to try. Xx

19.36PM

Hi have an update from the doctor today.
So she’s decided not to stop his sedation yet as she doesn’t feel he’s quite ready.
She said he is still coughing a lot and coughing up a lot of phlegm that needs suctioning up and this is causing his blood pressure to go a bit high.
She’d like this to be a bit more managed before they take him off the sedation however they have reduced it.
She said due to his size he is on a lot so any reduction will make some difference.
He’s needing Very minimal support from the ventilator and is still on 50% oxygen which she said she would like lower before they stop the sedation and remove the vent.
She said his chest does appear to be improving however she said these patients do you have ups and down days, over the three days she seen him there is an improvement.
She said his infection markers are coming down as are all of his other blood improving still.
She also said his temperature has now gone.
They have not started the trial today as he is not absorbing his feed fully which she said is common in patients on ventilators.
She started some new medications today and is hoping this will improve the absorption and also help with his constipation!
And she can start the trial drug tomorrow.
She said she’s hesitant to say it as she doesn’t want us to get ahead of ourselves but he’s progressing really really well.
But we have to acknowledge that he could take a step back at stages [like Callum in the NICU unit (premature unit)].
So overall a really positive day and she’s going to review him in the morning and decide what the next best plan is.
She does feel he needs another day or so on the vent to allow him to rest a bit longer.

8.03AM today

Spoke to nurse he’s managed really well overnight.
His oxygen is down to 45%. He’s managing to breath himself and is on minimal ventilation setting.
She said the only thing stopping them progressing now is his cough so they are getting chest physio to review today.
She said he is coughing himself but it causes his heart rate, oxygen and BP to drop.
Suctioning also does this so she said they will probably want him a bit more stable.
She said they will prob reduce the sedation slightly again.
Overall though another good night.
She thinks tube will probably come out in the next day or so then said they would monitor him and he’s probably go to a ward and then home!
Yes she said the H word! She said to still expect little set backs due to the nature of the virus but he was like a Totally different patient from last week xx
