Sarah rang during the day but all the doctors/nurses were very busy so could not talk.
She was informed that Iain was still stable.
18.34PM yesterday
HES AWAKE!!!
Dr has just rung and they’ve reduced his sedation and he’s awake.
He’s responding to questions and coughing loads up.
He’s still on high oxygen 60% as they’ve upped it to help with coughing but he’s managing well.
They said he could still go back on vent if he tires but he’s done 2 hours so far and is doing really really well!!
18.35 yesterday
I can’t believe it.
He’s still too hoarse to talk to me but he’s awake!!
Can you ask Mo, Mike, ( Mikes DR mate who is on the frontline) what he’s experience is of people having to go back on them? X
Mo said that’s great news - and don’t be surprised if he goes back on the ventilator for a bit (most do), but the fact he has come off it and showed he can breathe etc is the key thing.
Means he is beating it and now it’s just about managing this stage
Once he’s done with the ventilator fully (maybe expect a bit of back and forth), they will focus on reducing his oxygen to lower levels (so he is not highly dependant on it).
After that he will move out of ICU to the ward, where they will focus on getting him off oxygen altogether.
Then the focus is on getting him home.
Most patients will be weak at first coming home due to lack of movement, so this will take a bit of time to get back moving.
Each step can take days to weeks (it really does depend on the patient), but sounds like given Iain’s progress the past few days he is on fast track pace.
Also he mentioned that sometimes it can take a bit for them to be able to talk (due to intubation tube), so don’t worry about that if it doesn’t happen immediately.
8.20AM today
Hi I rang at 5AM (as Callum had been up since 3.30AM till then!) and they said he was still very drowsy with some mild sedation to keep him settled.
But he was responding to commands and answering anything they asked.
They said they would ring me if he needed to go back on the vent and so far I’ve heard nothing xx

A very welcome update Malc. It looks like he is through the worst now (fingers crossed) and can imagine how Sarah and the rest of the family are feeling.

Fantastic news Malc. .....sounds like he is on the home straight.
I've learned far more about this dammed virus from this thread than any of the "doom and gloom" media we get constantly rammed at us. Thanks for sharing your story at what must be a difficult time. Keep it coming.
