Manx Grand Prix 2014

This is a thread I started for the USA based boys so that's why it reads as it does.
I will continue to copy and paste it all on here
So we are off to the Isle of Man yet again, well we are in one weeks time!
"Posh Pete" who came with me to the TT earlier this year is also coming but is staying in the "falcon" hotel as my son Iain is coming along too so has got the spare bed at my mums
We are taking the Z1"s, my 72 Z1 and Pete's newly finished Z1B.
I will also be taking the H1R race bike as I have been invited by the kawasaki team (Collins and Russell)showing in a marquee at the grandstand
The BIG plus is I am also eligible for a closed roads lap of the course in the classic parade
The lap is open to people who have raced on the course or canprove they have had racing experience,they don't like to let just anyone loose on the course on the closed roads.
I raced in the late 70"s early 80"s along side ( behind!) Ronnie Russell of team Collins and Russell so I'm in
Incidentally Ronnie was a top class racer being Isle of Man champion on two occasions and had a third place in the Manx Grand Prix .
Ronnie's career was ended following a high speed crash in the Manx in 1979 on a race RG500.
He still limps today and has not been on a race bike since.
My son Iain age 22 (23 on the 30th August!) has just taken his CBT ( Compulsory basic training) at a training school .he had never rode a bike at all before he went!!
You cannot ride on the roads in the UK with out it.
Last night we went out and bought the same bike he has been learning on a little 125 Yamaha .
He set out tonight for the first time on his own for a short ride.
Trouble was he ended up out for over an hour and came back with the biggest grin I have ever seen :D :D

The H1R is currently with Good friend Dave Higgs of higgspeed exhaust pipe fame being "fettled" for "The Manx " as we call the event.
He has fitted the genuine front wheel I bought some 6 years ago!!
He has carried out a number of jobs/tasks I have asked him to do and the bike was due to be on the Dyno today.
I'm picking it up on Saturday some 55 miles away ( that's a LONG way in the UK!!!)
I will be keeping you all informed about the trip
Well the prep has not been with out its problems!
The wheel was an absolute bitch to fit, particularly the cables.
I had the two bottom ones made to go to the splitter and have a genuine kawasaki top cable .higgsy sorted it all in the end and then got down to getting it running.
It wouldnt!!!
Turned out two nuts had vibrated off under the crankcase and it blew out the left hand crank seal!
Throw into the mix that the timing had also slipped and it all took a bit of fettling
Front mudguard ok fender was also rubbing
Higgsy got there in the end and she's running good

Pick up was delayed till last night early evening and I have forwarded a video to Rick Sines who should giveMyself and Iain unloaded the bike yesterday morning as we need the van for work!
During my trip to higgsys I had also bought a new bike lift (secondhand)
As we have decided to have two lifts in the garage.
The lift was 9 miles from Higgsy so it worked out ideal
The lift was put in the garage which we had rearranged(had a clearance!) over the weekend.
Right hand carb has started dripping when the fuel was switched on so needs attention.
As the picture says the H1R in action in British Guyana where it was originally sold. It won the championship.its a whole other story on the history of the bike which I will write up if anyone is interested??

This is at cronk ny Mona just before signpost corner about 2 to 3miles before the end of the 38 mile lap
The front brake vents had no gauze in them to stop stones etc going in so one of last nights tasks was to make some and fit them.note how Higgsy has lock wired everything :salut:
The gauze came from an old radiator cover!!
The 72 Z1 and Iain's 125 will also be coming with us to use on the roads later in the week i

I bought it from Australia about 9 years ago for £900 (approx $1280) when I was told I was unlikely to find a Kawasaki one!
The wheel now sells for a maximum of £1500 (approx $2280)
I might try and sell it at the "Manx"
Finally when previewing the pics I notice "Rolo " the dog crept into the first pic in the garage! LOL :scratch:

Sad news from last nights practice session
The Manx Motor Cycle Club regrets to announce that Stephen McIlvenna, 39, from Randalstown in Northern Ireland, was killed during yesterday evening's qualifying session at the 2014 Manx Grand Prix on the Isle of Man in an incident at the Mountain Mile.
McIlvenna was an experienced racer who first competed in the Manx Grand Prix in 2005. He won the 2009 Junior Manx Grand Prix. He also competed in the TT Races in 2010.
The Manx Motor Cycle Club wish to pass on their deepest sympathy to Stephen's family and friends.
The Coroner of Inquests has been informed and an investigation into the circumstances of the accident is underway.
