Kawasaki Triples Club

Back when I was 18 and riding about with my mates from home it was the early '80s and RD250s, KH400s and GS1000 were our machines of choice. Leather jackets, cut-off denim jackets, blue jeans and AGV X3000 helmets. Biker discos, the smell of Castrol R and Bike magazine every month.

My hero was a guy called Paul Sample who illustrated the back page of bike with a strip-cartoon called Ogri, a hard core Brit biker with an attitude and a cool girlfriend. At art school I spent all my spare time unashamedly ripping off his style and techniques and produced dozens of pictures of all my mates and their bikes at the time.

Here's a few with a couple of me on my S3 triple. my girlfriend at the time used to put her cold hands up my jacket to keep them warm!


This is a guy called Pranny who was not a good pillion on a fast two stroke!

Lots of Z650s down the pub in the evenings


Still the odd brit bike around - we took the piss out of them as they were so slow.


Bikes like the Katana were evolving to take us into the modern era of knee down.


But the RD250/400 reigned supreme still in the wheelie competitions!

Quite a talent you have there Bic, really captures the era.
I used to painstakingly copy my favourite characters from Paul Sample's work.

Fab drawings Bic,there better than the match stick men i can draw,they made me smile.

Like the photo SAM. Those 125 Honda engines were the mainstay of first bikes for many. I had a 125 J - the one before yours before it got the new Euro makeover. And my brother has a 125 SL. They were a really underrated mini-thumper but didn't have any of the glam we all wanted to they were traded in for faster things as soon as we could.

Whilst I had a talent for reproducing the work of others, when I tried original work my lack of talent was obvious:



Spent a lot of time as a kid styling my Fizzy! I actually made this body work out of steel cut from an old fridge and a car roof. Brazed it together with a carbon arc torch.

I remember Ogri - The cartoon pictures and captions would just make you laugh
As i remember he had a sidekick that always had the rough ride! was it Earnest Thrasher?
I remember being in hospital for 4weeks in 1982 after breaking my left femur in a motorbike accident and my mates would bring the magazine in and Ogri was on the back page - cheered me up no end.

Aye Malcolm was his hapless mate, Kickstart his faithful mutt, and Mitzi his voluptuous ladyfriend! Met the great man, Paul Sample a few times, he used to live out by Whitchurch in Shropshire.
