Vehicle Reg.

About 5 years ago I bought a 250 S1A without the Log Book and no registration plate so I had a dating certificate off Rick so that in time I would get round to getting a new reg. About 3 weeks ago I was at the DVLA with a friend of mine and I asked what I would need to apply for an age related registration number. I was told that as it was a UK bike and that it probably had a log book in the past the original number should be traceable from the chassis number. I filled in the V62 and where the reg number goes on the form I put the chassis number. Today I had a letter from them with the original reg number and informing me that a log book was being processed.
Maybe useful information for others.

No you are wrong Sam, I was told this at enquiries, I filled the form in and sent it in by post , the same as posting from Scotland, England or even Swansea.

Did you attach a covering letter or just send in the V62 on it's own?

The V62 and a copy of Ricks dating Certificate basically because it had the chassis/engine number on it but the V62 wpould have been enough. Oh and the £25 for the log book

I've been pursuing a way of doing this for about 3 years with no luck. Phoned DVLA about 18 months ago and they said 'no - not without the original reg plate'. What gives? Mebbe I should try again.

They couldnt / wouldnt do it for me either and returned my £25 Cheque..
Perhaps we should all send our stuff to Eric instead..

By all means Wolfie but read the post again, I was told if it had been registered and had the log book issued then they should be able to trace the reg from the chassis number. Now when I got a new log book for my old h1a it only had the numbers on. When I took it for the next MOT the tester put on the MOT the H1F and then the numbers and this then caused a problem and I had to get a new log book. So apply for one with the letters and numbers and if they return it try by just using the numbers.
There could be a number of reasons why yours were not found, could they have been written off and deleted from the system? Had the bike been stolen and not recovered? There could be numerous reasons why your chassis numbers are no longer on the system.
I was a little concerned when I did apply for the log book it could have shown up as stolen 
Now let me tell you guys something about me as you seem to doubt my word I only talk facts not bullshit, so what I have told you is FACT it`s your prerogative whether believe me or not.

I have a Kh500 frame with no log book that Rick says is a UK bike.
Going to send off a V62 and try it.

Just to update the registration of the bike is EDW 97L.
Just went on the DVLA web site to check when last on road and it should have be taxed on the 1st Feb 1980.
So they do have records from way back.

James, have you tried a HPI check on the frame number? It may turn up the registration number if you are lucky.

Yep. I'm sure they have access to the info but they wouldn't do it when I asked. I'll try Eric's route again, maybe they've had a change of policy.

I tell you what James, send all the details to me and I will take it personally to the DVLA for you. As I said the original log book may have had only numbers for the chassis or numbers and letters so you may have to apply twice. If for some reason it`s been deleted from the system or the number has be reallocated then obviously they will not be able to trace the number.

Thanks Eric - a very kind offer! I may just try them directly first out of curiosity. It's only a shitty Harley 250 so I don't want to put you to any trouble.

Yep I may try the Puch again too, it is a UK bike so should have had a log book back then.
I had rung them and was told that the form and engine/frame numbers (and cheque) were all that was needed, and waited and waited, then one day, my cheque was returned, a note said that I could not apply for a Log book wiithout the original Redg, which had been my question to them in the very first place!!
It seems that I have to restore the bike get it MOTd for the road then apply for a new redg, all the time with the fear that it might then be taken and given back to a previous owner (with all my shiny parts) who had it stolen back inthe 70s.

Graham send me the details and I will hand it in at the DVLA for you, whether the dating certificate helped I don`t know but it wouldn`t harm to get one. It was the help desk told me what to do so I will hand it in to them. Believe it or not they are good at their job and helpful with it. I know I know it`s hard to believe but it`s true.
The same thing happened with my H1a when I think back, the log book I had was from 1975 and last taxed 1979 I had not undated the log book which I believe I should have done in the 80`s? I paid the VJMC £40 for a dating certificate ( to get an age related plate) , MOT`d it, Taxed it and sent a load of photographs with the application and they sent the lot back and said they still had it on file and sent be a log book with the original reg.
