Standard wording - it comes up the same for my car and bikes and has done so for some time. (not the MOT exempt bit though)

just checked the brit frame ive got on dvla site, it says exempt from mot also

Quick look on the web & it seems its just vehicles manufactured before 1960 at mo but there is a proposal for all historic classed vehicles to be both tax & mot exempt at some point , not clear when that is tho .. Yours looks like a cockup in your favour sam !

Had our local meeting last night and Simons KH250 also mot exempt! It's UK bikes only.

Just spoken to dvla , very helpfull but insisted pre 1960 only, I think you might find sam if you take your bike off sorn it will change to mot due ...

So it's a play on words? If it's sorn it's exempt?
So any vehicle on sorn will show this? Anyone with a younger vehicle on sorn?

Its typical dvla left hand / right hand i guess ..

My uk 70 (reg uk 3/70) is still taxed but shows mot expired , when the tax runs out i'll put it on sorn & see what happens ..
My mates uk 67 b120 shows mot exempt on sorn
The uk h2c i sold you shows mot expired & is on sorn
My import h1d is on sorn & shows mot expired

So dunno sam not a clue

Doing a test on the dvla vehicle check site with random classic vehicles off ebay , if its untaxed or sorn it comes up exempt for mot but if its taxed the mot becomes due ...unless its pre 1960 .

SAGA of the DVLA - Tax - SORN - MOT.
Cutting a very long story short:-
1) Bought B2 new 1977
2) Last used June 1979 (yeh I know, what a dick)
3) Lost logbook during moves
4) Applied to DVLA for replacement earlier this year - sent in forms, fee, and a SORN note to be safe.
5) Received replacement (no reg problems)
6) Checked up "Vehicle Details" on gov site and found this:- No SORN just untaxed.
7)OK I'll send in another SORN via DVLA site. Got email back confirming SORN. Checked later - same as 6)

8 ) Couple of days later got this in the post:- 9) Phone DVLA - pillar to post - eventually through to Gemma. Hold for ages while she goes off to see what's what.
10) Eventually Gemma confirms they have received both SORNs BUT any vehicl last taxed before 31st Jan 1998 doesn't need a SORN because their computers can't handle it!
11) Gemma assures me I won't receive a fine. So quite certain I will sooner or later this year or next; watch this space.

I have 3 bikes that were last on the road before 31 Jan 1998 - they all show up like yours.
SORN is not needed as the law - The Road Vehicles (Registration and Licensing) Regulations 2002 - Schedule 4 http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2002 ... ule/4/made states:

The Road Vehicles (Registration and Licensing) Regulations 2002 - Schedule 4 wrote: “relevant GB vehicle” means a vehicle which is registered in the GB records and kept in Great Britain, but does not include a vehicle in relation to which each of the following conditions is satisfied—

(i)neither a vehicle licence nor a nil licence was in force for the vehicle on 31st January 1998;

(ii)such a licence has not been taken out for the vehicle for a period starting after that date; and

(iii)the vehicle has not been used or kept on a public road on or after that date

I have never had a reminder or SORN demand - but I do have a letter that DVLA sent to my mate in 1998 (who sold me 2 of the bikes before he emigrated in 2007) which explains that you cannot declare SORN as they were untaxed/off the road before the cutoff date.

Just because the bikes have changed hands and change of keeper is notified makes no difference as the vehicle still does not become a "relevant vehicle".

But as soon as it is used on the road and/or taxed and MOT'd then it will become a "relevant vehicle".

Thanks for the information, Nick, I'll have something else to throw at the DVLA now, if they come back!
So by their own rules they should not have issued that "Last Chance" letter to me, but they did anyway. So it is possible they could also issue an automatic fine, especially as it's computerised and would be from the same dept as the letter - or they are just hard up. Where is all this joined up government they talk about?
