Old fuel, who says??

That fuel is shite after just a few months??

I just went in the Garage this evening to make sure my bikes still worked after the winter layoff, I didn't even cover them this year since the White KH (Grrrr) is on the hydraulic bench, where they would normally share a cover.

So I replaced the Headlamp bulb in the H2, Primed the carbs and after only around 5 or 6 kicks, one cylinder popped into life followed almost immediately by another then the last one several seconds after that, a bit of choke poking kept things going until it eventually settled down and I wheeled her out to smoke at the neighbours and turned my attention to the S1.

I forgot to turn the tap on but one cylinder started up first kick, then after some seconds died, I then remembered to turn the tap on and in another couple of kicks we were two cylindered, the last one always takes a little choke poking to bring to life so no suprises there, apart from the huge volumes of smoke (the NRVs leak).

Considering that it was early septemberish when I last went to work on the H2 and even longer since the S1 was out and about, I reckon this business of sour fuel after just a few months is a myth.. TBH I have never had to dump any fuel cos it wouldn't work.
(Apart from imported bikes with million year old fuel like paint stripper.that is).

Come on lads, get em out!

Minus two stroke Rally this weekend, the organiser is gutted, it's forecast to be nearer Plus 10!

You may have just been lucky Wolfie - my bikes have really sufferred from modern fuel, sometimes gumming up after only a month and a bit since last being started. It became an annoying routine - taking the carbs off and cleaning them....then I heard about Briggs & Stratton Fuel Fit (on here of course) and those worries are gone :D Started the KH250 only last week (second kick I think) after it being laid up since mid summer last year. Maybe the fuel round your way is still better quality than the shit we get in London :smt102

Some of my bikes have been laid up for over a year and they still start on the fuel that's in them.

I`d say it`s mainly due to condensation in storage ?

The ethanol absorbs the water, thus hugely lowering the combustability of the fuel.

Sotre the bike in a good dry zone, maybe even just under a quited cover may be enough to stop that " sweating " .

TBH, I find there to be more a problem with modern NGK plugs. Get them wet , and they never fire proerly again. !!!

I've switched to Bosch silver wire electrode plugs following a recommendation on this forum. They are excellent

You have a good point there Neil, my bikes are occasionally covered in condensation (luckily I have one of those super dooper blowers to clear it) so that could be whats happening. As for NGK plugs  :D

Started the KH today - 10 kicks - with fuel from September. When possible I always use 97.
