Removing twist grip rubber

At the weekend I was trying to replace the rubber grips on my H2 with a replacement pair of Rental race items. (Because I have fitted drop handlebars and wanted to see what the difference in riding experience was without the large diameter, webbed OE grips).
On the throttle grip I tried heating up the outer rubber with a heat gun until it was nice and warm and soft and it came away from the inner rigid moulded tube pretty easily at the top but I couldn't slide it off because it seems to be attached down at the other end. I didn't want to force things because I want to keep the outer grip in good condition so gave up without having got it off.
Does anyone know if it's possible to separate the inner and outer parts or are they not meant to be replaces except as a unit?
If that's the case does anyone know where I can get a spare throttle tube and grip?
Thanks
