H1B Ignition

I am again asking about Ignition systems, I removed the points from my H1B last year and fitted a Powerdynamo system it has been nothing but trouble, it took me months to get the bike timed correctly as the timing mark was wrong I eventually got the timing right and the bike seemed to go good and rev, I thought all was good , then after about 30 mile the bike started missfiring, I cleaned the plugs and it went OK for about 10 miles and the plugs fouled again, same thing every time I go out in the bike. I have gave in and decided to go back to points as the bike ran fine with them. I contacted Power Dynamo and they have agreed to give me a refund, but is there any other systems out there that work, I have had Electex mentioned but believe it doesn't support a charging system, also Boyer Branson but also its a wasted spark which would give me the same problem as the power dynamo. I believe there was a system called Starfire that uses the points as a pickup but they are now out of business , has anyone came across a working system.

These people from down under do a system for the BSA & Triumph triples, it may be possible to
adapt their system to fit an H1 if your good at electromechanical stuff.

Hi the Zeeltronic is no good for a points system it is just a programmable add on for electronic ignition the one I fancied was the Starfire but they are out of business now.

Not much choice then! Looks like its the Boyer system is your only option.
Many people have no problem with Boyer system, you just need your bikes electrical charging system to be working 100%.
Your only other option is to get creative with other systems on the market & adapt them to work on your bike.
You could try to fit a later triple system to your bike. But as i said you need to be good at electromechanical stuff.

You could always revert to using the points again?

Eventually got my H1A to run really well with Powerdynamo but had to work it out myself as they were little help
You'll find a long thread on the subject on this forum about a year ago,I think
Underlying problem is that it's a waste spark system system so it has to fire three time average revolution. So that's 27,000 times a minute at max revs. Problem is compounded by it being a self generating system
However it can be made to work. 1) Set ignition timing spot on to standard H1A spec with dial guage, 2) use fine wire electrode plugs (I've NGK gold palladium or Bosch (best) silver wire electrode ( this was important, they need less volts to fire them it seems), 3) set the plug gaps really tight - I run about 16 thou. This is essential - I run equivalent of B9s and semi-synth 2 stroke oil and despite the close gap have never fouled a plug
Running standard plugs or fine wire plugs with standard gaps and mine will not Rev over 6,500. Just not generating enough volts
If you haven't tried this already it's worth giving it a go. I've done about 1500 miles in al conditions and never had to change or clean a plug. And it's a much better charging system.

Good Luck.
I tried all of what Pop's has done and probably more and still couldnt get the the bloody powerdynamo system to work on my H1a. Never again.
Get yer brass back!

Dave.

I will go back to points but the nature of triple owners in this day and age is we are all tinkerers and that's why so many of us have spent so many hours trying to get these Power dynamos working I have noticed on there site it now said that the systems are only designed to go up to 6000 rpm on triples if you want your bike to rev above that the system won't work I'm sure the H1 owners will be queuing up to buy one who would want a triple that doesn't even reach the start of the power band.

I've fitted 3 new sets of points, timed them to 2.23mm BTDC new plugs new battery and the bike is going great , took it a wee 50 mile blast yesterday and didn't miss a beat I should have listened to you in the first place.

2.23mm BTDC ? Wow !! That's very precise !!

There is also this guys system...his system uses the points as pickups.....
here's the guy's email and the cost is $127 US
SOHC4 Shop =
sohc4shop@gmail.com
His email to me:
Hi, Jeff!
It does not REPLACE the points, rather it uses them as switches to trigger transistors that then do the hard work. This stops the points wear altogether, because they no longer arc. It actually works much better with USED points that have been run for a while, for a number of reasons. The transistor switching cools off the coils quite a bit, too, so they last longer as well.
I think I've suddenly been asked for more of these Triple units since February than I have made in the last 7 years, added together! It must be the Year of the Triples?
They are $127 each, postage for 2 in one box is $9 in the USA. It takes me a while to build these, as I usually only make them upon request. To get these, send me a check or money order to:
Mark Paris
8903 W. Florida Ave.
Lakewood, CO 80232
It will probably take almost 2 weeks to get them finished, as I am also working on 4 engines at the moment(!) as well.
Thanks!

Yes I contacted him as well but after spending a year on a bike that was running fine with points and giving in with the powerdynamo , when I refitted the points system it is again running fine I only do about 1500 miles a year on it so I think I will stick with the points, but it would be good to hear from anyone who has tried this system.

It might have been 2.2 to 2.25 I wasnt wearing my specs its amazing what you can do with a dial gauge, an old spark plug and a grub screw. the bike goes better than it did before it must be my bright Orange paint job.
