MOT Not Required

As of May this year Historic vehicles wont require a valid MOT, but beware. The only thing about the MOT is if you have an accident the insurance will use it as an excuse to hold back from paying out, I have heard several stories from boys with pre 1960's vehicles and the first thing the insurance asks is do you have a valid MOT even though it is not required by law, I now have 3 bikes that don't require an MOT shortly and due to the amount of money tied up in them I think it would be prudent to get them MOT ed as then there are no arguments about them being roadworthy. As you know insurance companies will do anything to avoid paying out, how many old rusty land rovers and ex farm vehicles that haven't been on the road for 15 years do you think are going to get pulled out and taxed, the insurance companies will not differentiate between these and a motor cycle that has been pampered. There is also the bike that has had a lot of money spent on it and looks good but has been put together by someone whose Engineering skills are maybe not as good as they think, think of the bikes you have bought that look good and when you look close they are death traps.

Typical interweb scaremongering I think. If a policy was invalidated it would only be because it is an offence to ride without a valid MOT, but you can already ride to and from a pre-arranged MOT test without one. No MOT would never totally invalidate your insurance as they cannot avoid their third party obligations, and anyway an MOT only proves a bike is roadworthy on the day of the MOT test. Sometimes not even on the day!
The insurance company may stipulate that your bike is kept in a roadworthy condition, although my policy does not. Generally if you make a claim where roadworthiness an issue, then they would rely on engineer reports and other evidence from the claims investigation rather than an MOT which could be almost a year old. Typically if you make a claim without MOT they may reduce the value by a small percentage, as a bike without an MOT is theoretically worth less, although this is also argueable if an MOT is not required
In the words of Corporal Jones, don't panic, don't panic!

Looks like it ain't for happening in Northern Ireland.
I have written to Dft{NI} for clarification bet that gets a slow response
Exemption From The Exemption – Northern Ireland
The consultation and the enactment of the exemption was through the Department for Transport (DfT). The DfT is the government department responsible for the English transport network and a limited number of transport matters in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland that have not been devolved.
The consultation itself stated, “The proposals in this consultation apply to Great Britain (given as vehicle testing is a devolved matter in Northern Ireland). Northern Ireland will develop its own proposals for implementation of the Directive.”
Any enthusiastic celebratory responses in Northern Ireland will have to be curbed for the present.
Although the DfI (NI) have launched a Consultation on the implementation of European Directive 014/45/EU in respect of vehicle testing legislation it does not include the 40 year rolling MoT exemption but deals with removing exemptions for certain vehicles, modification of existing provisions for the testing of fast tractors, creation of new exemptions (not motorcycles), introduction of a 60 day limit for the carrying out of retests following failure to pass a periodic vehicle test, technical testing method and reason for failure.
We look forward to the Northern Ireland department responsible for the MoT, Department for Infrastructure (DfI) launching a consultation as they previously did, in 2012 with the decision then to mirror the rest of the UK exemption for motorcycles and light goods vehicles manufactured or registered before 1960.

So if you have a bike that’s been imported and registered in the last 40 years then it needs an MOT ?

Hi Chris , I just did some of mine , some were historically taxed already and no problems just had to tick the declaration box to say they were NOT substantially modified , it backdated the tax to the 1st May and just gave me a note that they were already taxed but that was fine .
Got a few to take to the post office because I haven’t registered them as historic Tax yet so it only worked on those that were
BTW some of mine had not been MOT’d for quite a few years but they still accepted them all, so now all MOT and TAX free

Of the two options available for the Mot part of the online form, which one is the correct option, the top one?
My bike shows as taxed but no details shown for the mot?,it does however suggest it can take upto 5 days

Just renewed my " tax " online for the 72 S1.
She is still mot`d until 5th July. So it went through without addressing the " no mot " issue.
( Although I would contend that DVLa will take your tax money on ANY vehicle. Mot or no MOt. They will also take a double payment if you were to accidentally pay it twice . Then it`s up to you to notice and claim it back. Which was easy when you had two tax discs, but now,......!! )
So , I cannot see anyway to change my mot status to " Not required ".
Guess I`ll wait till it runs out and see what happens ?

Higher up Chris said his Bikes were already taxed.. mine too..
So, you don't get the chance to Tax them again. Where does it give you the MOT Exempt declaration if you can't actually go through the Tax (or Tax exempt) procedure? Do you have to declare it SORN, then re Tax it?
Maybe I'll just ring and book an MOT on Sat.

Gra sorned the 400 had to go to the Post office to re tax wouldn't let me do it online gave me the tax so I assume this wouldn't have happened if I needed a mot? I have been told they automatically become exempt from 20th of May

So SORN-ing and Re taxing online isn't an option then Chris..
In other threads and on other sites it is said that you have to actually apply for the exemption (as in ticking that little box), it's not automatic.
It sounds like the Police themselves might not even know a lawbreaking bike for a while yet..
I'll just ring ATG for an MOT appointment, then I can pay the local Bike Rally a visit afterwards too..
