Im looking for some info from here even though it is not about My H1, but I know a lot of people on here have had dealings with registering imports. I have just Picked up a Z1300 project bike from one of my pals to do up next winter, the issue I have is that the bike is Q plated, which I dont want to use, but he has also supplied me with a rolling chassis for a Z1300 Voyager which was imported from Canada I have the original owners certificate and the receipt from HRMC showing that the duty and VAT have been paid. I have read that you have to register it on the NOVA system and when you build it you have to get it MOTed and insured on the frame number before registering it. The main issue I have is when I build it it will have the engine out of the UK Q plated bike, but the engine is completely standard and of almost the same spec as the original engine, will I have a problem registering it on an age related plate as I dont want to spend the time and money getting the frame powder coated and rebuilding the bike for them to say it is not standard and me having to register as a Q. It would be good to know if anyone has imported a bike without an engine and fitted a different engine before registering it.

You need to get the new frame on the NOVA system if you intend registering it. You don't need insurance to register it (unless you live in Northern Ireland).
There are plenty of posts on here about whether you need to MOT it or not. In theory you don't need to (if its 40 years or older) if you submit a V112, Some members have gone this route with success. There is a chance VOSA will come and inspect it and it should (again in theory) be road legal but my understanding is inspections are rare. Personally I usually get them MOT'd as its just a bit more evidence that the bike exists, is complete and it's had another pair of "official" eyes checking it over....and of course you know its safe !!
On the subject of the engine there is nothing to stop engine swaps and providing they are the same model all, DVLA will want to know is the number change. However I don't know if they are capable of recognising when the engine number is already in the system i.e.. if you attempt to register it in the new frame BEFORE the Q plate bike has been de-registered or at least SORNed. Its probably worth a punt and I suppose if they do flag it you could then SORN the Q plated bike quickly.
Just be very careful with your application and make sure you have all the paperwork completely correct as they will reject it for the smallest issue. See other posts on this subject....notably from RB if you want to see how picky (read stupid !) they can be.

Thanks for that the Q plate is still in my pals name as I have not changed the v5 yet he said it is scorned as the bike hasn't been on the road for 20 years it may even be before the sort started the problem is I don't want to build up the bike and then have a problem registering it and have to then strip it down and get a new frame.

I believe if you get dating certificate from Rick you can re register with correct age registration.

I forgot to say that I have the original Canadian ownership certificate , If I was to apply for registration using the frame number, and the original engine number ( even though I dont have the original engine I suspect it is still in Canada) would I maybe get an age related plate and a V5 of which I could then send to DVLA and change the engine number to my own engine. Has anyone went down this road.

I've checked the paperwork and the Canadian ownership is the wrong one, another way I was thinking of is the q plate has not been taxed since 1996 if I was to get a dating certificate for that frame and apply for an age related plate as if I bought the bike without a reg number is it possible that that would work , my main issue is I don't want to spend time and money getting the frame powder coated and rebuilding the bike until I know that I can get an age related number for the bike.
