I've got a 3.5" rear on my bike, but it has an H2A swinging arm. I'm putting the same size wheel into my other H2 but this one has an H2B/C swinging arm and I anticipate no issues with wheel width. Tyre size is 18" x 150/65 for both. Might go bigger if there's plenty of room in the H2B/C swinging arm.
Neither are stock H2s though, so can't guarantee that things like chain guards might prove restrictive.

There are a couple of things to consider when thinking of increasing tire width....
-For safety reasons the rim width should also be increased.
-Added width will have a negative effect on handling.

Also note that different brands will have different clearance widths even though the size is spec'ed the same.

Thanks for your input ...most helpful....gonna possibly go for a 3.5 rear rim and 150/70 tyre and 2.15 front with a 100/90 front...Avon road riders....anyone running this size? ...or see problems..I know it'll be a bit tight

The brake torque arm is the first thing to interfere with any tyre going much oversized, followed by the chain guard (and possibly chain). On the drag bikes we use offset sprockets to move the chain out of the way, but this requires a bit of relieving of the frame tube on the outside run of the chain.
