My pal in the USA sent me this he had received off ebay re sales to Uk etc from 1st Jan


Starting January 1, 2021, eBay will be legally required to begin collecting and remitting value-added tax (VAT) for consignments (shipments of goods) imported into the UK with a value of up to £135. eBay will charge buyers the applicable VAT amount directly and remit this sum to the UK Tax authorities.

U.S. sellers who create listings on the UK or any EU site and who trade with UK buyers will need to provide both gross price (i.e., the item price including VAT) as well as the applicable VAT rate used to calculate the gross price on all listings. If sellers do not specify gross price and VAT rate, or if sellers specify a VAT rate of 0%, eBay will assume that the price provided is the net price (i.e., the item price excluding VAT), and eBay will calculate the gross price that is displayed to buyers.

We strongly urge sellers listing on eBay.co.uk or any EU site to update their existing listings to include applicable VAT rates as soon as possible. All new listings should include a VAT rate. You will find the field for the VAT rate beside the price when you create or edit listings.

What you need to know:

- Starting January 1, 2021, eBay will start to collect and remit VAT for UK imports on all consignments with a value of up to £135. There will no longer be a VAT exemption for small consignments up to £15.

- In cases where the seller is a non-UK business and the goods are already in the UK, eBay will collect and remit VAT for goods sold to consumers within the UK, regardless of their value.

- Sellers should begin listing the applicable VAT rates on all their existing and new listings as soon as possible.

- Starting March 1, 2021, a VAT rate will also be required on all EU sites when listing items.

I have seen this from a supplier in NZ.
If i buy from outside the E.U. or the UK I don't see why i should pay UK VAT via Ebay, it's bit like their Global postal service, especially from the USA , it puts the prices up by as much as 100%. People will have to resort to getting "friends" to mail packages on.
It's funny how customs and excise have not said much about this.
Where as in years past , if you bought an item privately that was it the price quoted is the price you paid ,now they want to collect vat on every purchase, second hand or not .

Sounds like lots of hassle for sellers outside the UK. I imagine it will put sellers off shipping to the UK

The Americans it would seem just submit to the Ebay Global postal scheme , its the only option for them to use!

You can buy all sorts of cheap tat from China who are price friendly and free post, i can see this changing also.

eBay have to comply with the British Government's VAT rules which are changing as a result of leaving the EU.

Yep, true.
New car prices are going up 10% in the New Year too, which reminds me of the bad old days when we were ripped off before the EU brought our prices in line with what the rest of Europe were paying.

Think that's going to be the least of our worries compared to the Covid bill that'll be dropping onto our mats every day for the rest of our lives.

cashing in my private pension and moving it euros!, my old 4x4 is now on French plates, 300,000 miles on the clock, and have full French rights, so cutting up my Eh card, will empty the UK bank accounts before the end of December, and I am out!!

was already the case in France since years even if sometimes custom miss you.
