Dip stick position

Morning all, just a quick one, when checking the gearbox oil level, on my 1975 S3a, do I screw the dip stick all the way in and then unscrew to take a reading, or just rest the dip stick on top of the threads ...cheers

Any of you time served triplers have an easy way of reading the dipstick? Nice clean oil on a light metal sirface is getting harder to see as the years pass! I've resorted to rolling the business end on a piece of blue paper to give me a clue.
That may read a bit like my sex life,but it's really not.

I don't screw mine in,oops! But I do have to put it on a rag to see where the oil is, it's near the bottom mark so probably fine, but now I'll have check it again

Change your oil for some Bovril. Always here for any free help.

Hi.
First, be sure you have the good dipstick :

To know the oil level, I just place the dipstick, without screw it.
And the oil must wet the bottom.
