If yer careful you don't need to open the casing. you can yank the drive assembly out once the cable is removed, but....

Watch for the little thrust washer that is left behind down the hole, when you come to refit, put the gear in on it's own so you can see that the shaft goes through the washer and doesn't push it off it's ledge.

If it falls off then you definitely have a cover removal imminent.

Usually the leak is the seal or O Ring, check the shaft at the seal area, they rust and pit and will simply rip your new seal to bits in no time.
The O Ring is a precise size.

watched the 1st half, I thought we (lfc played ok)
decided that we would get home far too late if we stayed in Liverpool to watch the 2nd half, so had to make do with radio commentary

thought we deserved the draw

considering were we where before King Kenny took over I am well happy

Happened on my old S2A once many years ago, but gearbox oil came from the gasket under the oil pump. The source? One of the two holes holding the pump to the side of the casing is drilled right through and the screw in this particular hole had worked loose!

May not be your problem, but worth checking for.
