Doomed

had my H1A moted on friday, it sailed through, so I thought I'll ride it to work this morning.
the bike felt very heavy, at the petrol station I checked the tyre pressures 14 front, 9 rear !
with some proper wind in the tyres the bike was flying, had a great ride, until I got to opposite The crucible & the bike started making strange grinding, metal to metal noises

Wipped in the clutch and the engine is now solid
the 2 mile push to work was not fun (who thought it was a good idea to build a city on 7 hills!)
will ring recovery when it is home time
expect picures of an imploded engine later

You're not still using that 2 stroke recovered out of old scooters are you Gary?

Yup, but to be honest, I should have stripped it when it nipped coming back from the Isle Of Man, this was due to gloop on the oil tank gauze.
but I just rode it.
anyway, I really am still well ahead of the game, my H2 hydrolocked because of exess fuel in the crankcases.
this problem might be oil related, but till I strip it I won't know
not bought 2 stroke oil in over 10 yrs

The more I hear about these filters in the oil tank clogging up with gloop the more I'm wondering whether I should just take mine out. They may actually cause more damn problems than they solve.

Don't think Big K would have put a filter there for no reason

Filters by their very nature are meant to be changed or cleaned every once in a while

A valid point I suppose but I'm still in two minds about this one.

make a little filter screen that fit in the fill neck, problem solved!

Genius !
I'm going to look into that, I've got a couple of old car windscreen washer bottles lying around with removable filters in the neck of them.
Thanks JA-MOO. :smt023

I wish it was my idea, but someone told me about it. Thought I would share a great idea.....

As I use oil that has been in other 2 stroke oil tanks (from breakers foc) I watch carefully as the oil goes in, I don't recall pooring any gloop into my tanks, but I am finding it on my filters, I now check them once a year

I think this is a brilliant idea
Only one question before I go the same way.
What happens if the oil in the tank turns to gloop due to different oils used ???
Any thoughts.

Well, whilst I don't think it's an infallible idea, I think I'd rather have some oily gloop going into my engine than no oil at all !
I bought a few bottles of Redline two-stroke oil a while back (I still have them) and over time there was a sediment which settled out in the bottom of the bottles. I contacted redline about this (I also posted a thread somewhere about it, maybe not on this board) and they told me that it was an additive that had fallen out of suspension due to the bottles sitting still for a while.
They assured me that it would do no harm to my engine in that state but needless to say I'm not convinced & it's not going anywhere near my bike ! I got a refund from Opie Oils where I bought the oil as a gesture of goodwill as despite Redline's assurances they could see I wasn't happy about it, fair play !
Anyway, it's this sort of settlement that really worries me with two-stroke oils that sit for a while. The sediment I saw in the bottle would be unlikely to pass through the fine filter in my tank & indeed it may not even pass through the oil feed tube to the pump. Redline tell me the sediment itself would not have been harmful to my engine (assuming it actually made it there) presumably therefore it has some sort of lubrication qualities.
On that basis I'd rather take my chance by removing the filter & having any such sediment or gloop reach my engine rather than clog the filter up and starve the engine of any lubrication at all.
Just my tuppence worth on this.

A sage said earlier that the gloop is mostly chemicals degrading from the oil itself...
I can neither confirm or deny this though.

Some of you may remember a rally where I siezed my H2c a few times on the ride out - no real reason as I wasn't even going fast, got back to the site, took off the oil feed to the pump - No Oil, took off the tank funnel No Oil . . and yet the sight window was full! - - Took out the sight window and the mineral and Synthetic oil had turned into a gel and glooped the inside of the window to give the impression that the tank was full

While on the subject " I mixed a few different oils , and put them in glass bottles to see if they gell"ed , Left on shelf for months.
One was Castrol R40. & rock oil
The others were carlube & castrol TT,
And to everyone" surprise, none waxed or seperated,
and used it all in chainsaws..

maybe the constant vibration causes separation of some of the compounds?

OK
so I have been using free oil for over 20 yrs, I think that I might have to have bought maybe 2 or 3 bottles of oil in that time, must have easily done 40 to 50 thousand miles on 2 strokes(only owned one big four stroke), yes I have had seizures and engines blow up, but who has not?
still reckon I have saved a few thousand pounds in oil costs
anyway it is not like the oil has been used, just poured from one container on the shelf to another on the bike, oh then into a big drum and then into my big drum and in my bikes, it looks crystal clear, just like it came out of the bottle
like I have said before in the 60's when kawasaki were developing these engines oil technology was no were near as good as it is today
