I bought the best welding set I could buy twenty one years ago. It was a Kemppi PSS3500 Multisystem, meaning that it was a MIG, MMA and TIG unit all in one. The 350amp power source used state of the art inverter technology and only needed a 20amp 3 ph supply. The water cooling unit, TIG and MIG units were separate items. I bought all the accessories for it too, including a Pulse unit as well as a range of torches. As you can imagine, it was a lot of money at £11600 plus VAT. It was used everyday in my workshop on the job we bought it for and then when we lost the job, it just sat there, hardly being used for the next nineteen years.
Why have I told you all this you may ask? Well, we are planning to move next year to a much smaller place and so I won't have a three phase supply. I looked into replacing my superb but huge welding set with a smaller single phase unit. Today I had a demo of a Kemppi MasterTig 2300 AC/DC ACX. It was fantastic! I was welding 8mm thick ally plates together with no problem at all. This can be achieved by using much less power as it's so much more efficient. The process I used today is called Synergic Pulsing (steady there, Hal!
) Here's a picture of the unit next to my old unit. It weighs just 15kg and it will run from a standard 16amp plug!!
I think I may have to buy it...
