Should be compulsory viewing as part of the driving test never mind just Christmas. People have no idea how dangerous vehicles are, even sober.

I used to be involved in a recovery yard and saw the horrendous results.

40% of Road traffic Accidents involve someone who has had an alcoholic drink.
They"re not neccessarily over any limit, or the cause of the accident. just involved.

So you would reduce RTA`s by LESS than 40% with a total no-alcohol limit.

However, using the same logic. You could reduce RTA`s BY A MINIMUM OF 60% , if you banned all sober people from the roads.

Its like the SPEED KILLS argument. No it doesn`t. Stupidity . inability and/or selfish carelessness kills.

By the way, we still have the safest roads in Europe. ( And that possibly means the world ? )

We may all know somebody thats lost a family member etc to a drunk driver. But I for one know many more killed on the roads by sheer stupidty.

btw I tried drinking and driving ONCE. On my 17th Birthday. 7 Bacardi & Cokes ( Why ?!! I hate that stuff !! )
Got out and onto my bike. Kicked up the side-stand, and promplty fell over. Forgot to leave a foot down !! My mates picked me up , and gave me a lift home. PHEW. Saved everbody that night !

Meanwhile in the UK,
A 73yr old Couple died in a tragic motor accident in Kilmarnock Scotland on Saturday.
They were mown down in the Car Park of a Garden Centre, by a 53yr old woman driving a Citroen C3................................

No drinking was believed to be involved. Clearly speeding would have been difficult, given it was in a car park AND it was a Citroen C3 !!!

Still, if she`s being done for Death by Dangerous Driving ( unlikely ) the good citizens of North America will be safe from her , as she`ll not get into either Country with a criminal record !!.

So the pot-ridden drunkards veering about Canadian streets in their gigantic pick-up trucks will be safe enough !!!

Shit happens, we all play the numbers game with life and luck, i dont see the point in pushing your luck by adding alcohol to the mix. Interestingly the rta death toll in the UK has stayed pretty constant since the 1930s, in absolute terms, given the massive increase in milles travelled and speeds involved it shows the massive investment in making cars safer, and whilst things like compulsory seat belts and helmets are viewed by some as impositions, i guess they have had a major impact on road fatalities. Most RTAs occurrr in accident black spots, ie areas that statistically have been shown to carry substantive risk increaces. It is cost effective to change these road layouts. One very interesting experiment took place in Holland where on certain urban streets they removed the kerbs, planted trees to obscure the view, seems counter intuitive. Truth is the majority of drivers percieve the area as a high risk area, are unsure of the layout and slow down accordingly...go figure!

Thankfully nobody has only half read what I wrote and thought I was condoning Drunken driving. Laws are made to the lowest common demoniitor . So we legislate against the the stupidest , and subsequently persecute the majority .

I tend to get around things like "those damned speed cameras" by simply sticking to the speed limits. While watching the sactimonious hypocrites who ( I imagine ) are the ones who scream the loudest about bad drivers , overtake me at 10mph over the limit. ( They being, young Mothers, IMPORTANT businessmen koff, etc )

Those RTA statistics since the `30s . Thats v. interesting. In relation to DUI`s. Consider this ;
Current Drink/alcohol limit is 80mg
Some folk want this reduced to zero.

So today I could legally consume 1 1/2 pints of beer and be legal ( Safe ? !! )
If the law changed for tommorrow, I may consume the same amount one evening , but have , say 20mg in my blood the next early morning when I set off to work, and be DANGEROUS !!!!! .............
Again, not condoning drinking a bottle of whisky and then driving home coz I iz too drunk ta walk. But highlighting how simplification of ANY topic just makes it all too stupid .

C.J. You were def. not being rude. Conditions in Canada are very different from the UK. We`re a cramped little Island, where you can easily get a taxi/bus/walk home. So its far easier for us to enjoy life ( Oh yes, alcohol is life.!! Its a Scottish thing ! )
I spend a lot of time in the Mid West states of the Us, and getting around anywhere means driving due to the vast spaces involved. ( And Canada is SO much greater !! ) I can`t imagine just how big the problem of DUI is over there.

I`ve always thought the best way to improve driving consideration would be to remove all safety features on a car, and fit a sharp spike to the steering wheel that would impale you on any impact.................................extreme. Yes. but not much more extreme than a total drink ban !!!
( Kids and old people would still get mown down , good people would still die thru` stupidity, but we may finally start killing off the really stupid people who cause the accidents, currently kept alive by airbags and crumple zones. )
