went in to local dvla to register bike and they want to inspect it i hav'nt got a van or trailer, can i ride her there without a number plate?

I know you can legally ride to an mot station as long as the bike is insured, booked in and not registered without a plate

not sure about dvla..

Yes you can so long as its insured or they will come to you to inspect it but that takes a lot longer.

When I needed a bike inspected (in my case for change of taxation class), they came to my house, even though my bike was already taxed, tested and road legal!!

Sorry to say, but I think you are wrong, I had a BIG row with the wankers a couple of years ago, when they stopped doing "house calls" and they told me that all future inspections had to be done at the local office - Yes, you can legally ride it to an M.O.T. but you cannot legally ride it to the DVLA the wankers threatened to report me if I rode it to them without a legal registration plate.

Rick is correct, I asked at Gosforth a couple of years ago and they said it was definitely not legal to ride to the inspection.

On the up side the staff at our local DVLA office are excellent and couldn't be more helpful, all they do is check the engine and frame numbers match the documents and that's it, about 15 mins in total

If you ride it there then you must get rid of the evidence and let it cool before they view it.

Actually, they never even wanted to see it.

When you go for your MOT, first check that the tester has experience of testing a bike with no registration. Although not difficult, it will require a lot of assistance (and time) by phone from the VOSA people.

Seems like it must be a different policy at my local dvla office then, I get several imported cars and bikes inspected every year and I've always been told that so long as I have a appointment its ok to ride or drive it there.

booked my bike in for an mot on the frame number

rode it to the mot station

got it's mot with the frame number

went to dvla, paid my fees, was told they need to see the bike

trailered the bike to the office, they looked at eng and frame no

2 days later tax disc and proof of reg arrived in the post

took proof of reg and mot to the test station

new mot issued with reg number FOC

docs arrived a few days later

simple and straight forward

Bit weird that Gaz, as when the DVLa register the bike they print the new MOT with the age related number, there and then. That usually arrives with the Number Plate Authorisation form and the new Tax Disc.

Interesting subject, got an appointmaent at Wimbledon next Thurs, hiring van, as no hope of riding thru South London without getting a pull for no reg plate !!

that's they way to do it, just van it , it saves a lot of problems if you get a pull!

A Few years have passed now but when I got my 72 H1d & 72 H2 registerd at Maidstone DVLC Office I rode my H1 with KH500 number plate, & H2 with H1 number plate no problems

Even though i was told by MOT centre i did'nt need to?

However in those days they did'nt have all the M.O.T camera's

got the documentaton from dvla this morning MCU 317K historic tax disc bonus!!!

in 1992 I got MCU 116K They haven't done a lot in twenty years

Hey Malcolm, I did two 1974 bikes at Manchester two years apart and the number is 7 digits away, CNF62M and CNF69M, one they wanted to inspect, one they didn't, if I remember correctly I didn't have the title for the one they wanted to see, the one with full USA/UK paperwork just sailed through.

THIS was bugging me and I checked at the local DVLA, they gave me a STANDARD form, issued by the national DVLA but with a local office address on :

Got the thumbs up from inspector today ))

however, was told reg. no and tax disc will ONLY be sent via post, expect 3-5 days as only sent out 2nd class post.

Ah well, at least the light can be seen at the end of the tunnel !!

The regional differences here are astounding. At Newcastle Gosforth DVLA , they are really, really helpful, they usually ask "do you want it posted out or if you leave a number we will ring you to collect when ready if you want it quickly"

got my tax disc and reg no in the post BEFORE bike was inspected the lady inspector checked frame and engine no matched paperwork 5 mins in total what a waste of a days holiday
