Has it happened to any of you?

My S3 is due its MOT, the front brake is a bit spongy so I thought I would bleed it. Undid the cap on the master cylinder and the whole lot came off; [ie screwed out] before I realized what was happening I had brake fluid all over the switch, levers etc. 
Luckily I had covered the tank before starting the job!!
I cleaned it off and hopfully managed to avoid any real damage!!!
Is this a common thing? I guess I must have tightened the cap too much
I suppose this is not news to most of you, but it scared the crap out of me!!!
