It all depends if it sells. The listing has ended with 21,900 showing. Waqiting for a call.

Effin heck Roger :smt103 - really?

I keep going back to look at the pictures in his auction. It is a fantastic looking bike and superb value in my opinion (he was only asking £26k in his classified). I wonder what the original build cost was :smt102

I would give him a ring .
It shows you`re serious , and may sway his decision , if he`s dithering .

Or at least shorten the agony of not knowing !!

Its worth what someone is willing to pay which in the last auction was £21500?
I would have valued it before that at £25,000?
BUT unlike Neil i would prefer a genuine racebike rather than a replica even though like grandads axe its had 3 new heads and 5 new handles but is still original :D :D :D

Eric I`m no expert on Race Bikes "with provenance" But I do have a , err, robust opinion on all thaqt malarkey.

Malc likes to dabble with the "real" thing. But he also understands the issues. I`m not impressed if some machine is claimed to have been ridden by some other racer, or whether it was the exact one that won some race or other. I`m impressed with the bloke`s acheivement , but it`s just a machine. It`s a tool. That`s all.

OK, so it may be an absolute one off . But if you build a similar one, then I would enjoy trying to use tha tool just as much. It`s thje experience and thrill of riding the machine , not feeling all cosy about owning a tool that I could never use properly that would thrill me.
OK, I have had my own race bikes . I couldn`t ride them very well relly, but at least I tried, and put them to the use they were built for. If I had an ex-works bike ( Which in this instance was one of 3, and parts were swapped all over between them ) it wouldn`t be so special to me as one I`d taken and adapted myself to get the best out of it.

As it happen , I have some , possibly interesting stories about <ick Grant at the TT when I was "libibg the dream" and was out on the track with him. Unfortunately, for this forum, we were Suzuki and Honda bound ( Oh, both seemingly " Works" bikes on one of those occassions !! ) But it was the experienc that was the thrill. Not the actual machine. ( Ah, and now there was another time when I was put on a UK Honda " Works " RC30 wearing Brian Morrisons new leathers , to run them both in around the TT circuit. He was lap record holder at the time. It was on open roads till th Mountain part. And clogged with fans going as fast as they could. Did I feel proud ? Nah, kept my visor down !!! But it was interesting using a works bike. Would I pay big money for it ? No. I was just as happy with my own non famous RC30 !! )

So, it`s just a different point of view. You can keep your "precious" genuine TT winning bikes ( with debatable parts fitted. Somebody will ALWAYS claim they have the REAL original !! ) A machine is a machine. If it looks like on, smells like one, and goes like one. Then that`ll do me. I`d have the brand new replica , built the ex GP master mechanic. Thumbs Up

Ok, I have already mentioned my involvement on Ricks forum but here is what I know from my own replica H1R-W.

Nigel went to Beaulieu Museum and saw the original H1R-W is a very sad state, it was donated to the museum at the end of the 75 season or in early 76 and left on display for years without being used so Nigel offered to restore it if they would let him copy it and make a few replicas.

Nigel thinks that there were only three or maybe four bikes originally made and at least one was broken up for spares, Grant had one and Ditchburn had one and one may have been in Japan, there is certainly a picture in the Sunrise to Z1 book showing one in Japan but as they made them there anyway it could be any one of them?

The bike was built for Stan Shentons race team to win the 75 senior TT and the bike did win it with Grant as rider but only just as the bike seized up at some point and he was going to retire but it freed off again and by some miracle he won the race.

Even Stan Shenton has recently said that the bikes they raced were often mixed up by using different frames and engines so he cannot confirm which bikes are the TT winning machines and which bikes were Ditchburns!

I have some close up pictures of the Beaulieu bike that Nigel sent me and that one has Grants trademark R/H gear change as does the bike that Rick had in his museum but I need to check if Ditchburn used similar?

Back to the replica H1R-W, the engine is as Rick said based on road going bottom end with welded up and machined cases just like the factory bikes, cast water-cooled top end, dry clutch, six speed gearbox, the frame swing arm, tank, seat and many parts are made by Harris and are available on there website.

The forks are based on road bike units but use a magnesium lower also available from Harris at £900 a pair plus VAT!

Wheels are Morris replicas made by Marvic in Italy from magnesium, the clutch cover is magnesium as are many other parts.

On my own bike I have changed many of the fasteners to titanium to make it look even more authentic although Nigel said they would'nt have used them in the day as the bikes were light enough already!

Rear shocks are hagons and in my opinion it is a thing of beauty which I cannot start where I live as it is just too bloody loud!!
The pipes are unsilenced just as they were in 75.

So Nigel built the first of four replicas which I think is the one that Phil Morris was trying to sell and he is asking less than what he paid for it.
The second went to a guy in Ireland, the third is mine and Nigel plans to make the last one for himself when he finds time, I think he could make more but he would have to commission new engine parts which would mean having another batch made so it is unlikey but he also told me that if he was to build more then the price would be considerably more.

If you look at the Phil Morris bike or even my own bike and work out the cost to build them, (check out the price of the chassis parts on Harris website) they are a bargain and built by the same guy that used to fix them in the day!
