Clutch out and cleaned up reassembled and works lovely dry ( not with engine running) . Some 10/30 2 stroke gearbox oil ordered and new gasket . Now I will be told that's the wrong oil, thanks for your help guys hopefully it will be screaming its pipes off soon.

Yeah !! It's amazing how much confusion there is on this issue. Wolfie saying he used ATF 80/90. , for example.Macbusa04 wrote:Clutch out and cleaned up reassembled and works lovely dry ( not with engine running) . You've got the best grade for the purpose. Now if your clutch slips, take a look at the mechanical components. It certainly will not be anything to do with the oil !!!

The ATF comes well recommended by people I respect, but my own experience is not so good, it does the job but not as well as I expected.

No Wolfie. you missed what you said before. It's either ATF, automatic transmission fluid at about 5w. OR EP80/90. Which is a specific hyoid gear oil.Wolfie wrote:The ATF comes well recommended by people I respect, but my own experience is not so good, it does the job but not as well as I expected.

Re: Gearbox problems
It's EP 80/90... and says "for automatic transmissions" on the bottle.. so now I'm confused again.

Re: Gearbox problems
I`d be surprised if it does. Put EP80/90 in an automatic box and I would expect it to blow up through the pressure.Wolfie wrote:It's EP 80/90... and says "for automatic transmissions" on the bottle.. so now I'm confused again.
ATF is very thin. You`ll probably just have "TF" and imagined it otherwise. ( Cue Pete Aris posting up a picture of a.t.f 80/90 bottle
You`d be as wll putting Mazola cooking oil in your box as using ATF .

No Pete. The person who put Mazola in their gearbox would be silly .petearis wrote:Now you're being silly Neil, I put this in my bikesNeil the Don wrote: I`d be surprised if it does. Put EP80/90 in an automatic box and I would expect it to blow up through the pressure.

Re: Gearbox problems
Dismantled the clutch changed the oil and still got dragging clutch. The plates were very sticky to the steel would a new set of fibre plates do. With no weight on back wheel it goes back to neutral but any resistance on the back wheel and wont shift back. Need help this problem is driving me nuts.

People where talking motor oil, I don't think they meant motorcycle oil, which again has different properties to motor oil

Re: Gearbox problems
The 10/30 oil still seems to make the clutch drag. I have a new actuator by Ralph in Germany and all adjustments set. Going to try Putoline sae75 oil next .

Re: Gearbox problems
You could have some warped clutch plates (the steel ones)
Are any of the plates blue in colour?
If they are you can lay them on a flat surface, a surface plate would be ideal, if you don't have access to one then I suggest using a pain of glass, lay the clutch plate on the glass and use some feeler gauges to see ifthe steel plates are flat.
Have you measured the clutch springs to see if they are within the service limits?

Re: Gearbox problems
In all seriousness
We all know 2 stroke and motor oil has come on leaps and bounds since 1971, I assume ATF has as well
Fuel has changed a hell of a lot since 1971
Things progress, I'm pretty sure the advice from Kawasaki in 1971 was great back in the day with back in the day oil
The question is would Kawasakis advice be the same today for today's oil
Or would they rewrite the script ?

I'm in exactly the same boat with my H2 - is there some sort of clutch virus going around...Macbusa04 wrote:The 10/30 oil still seems to make the clutch drag. I have a new actuator by Ralph in Germany and all adjustments set. Going to try Putoline sae75 oil next .
One wheel's enough...
