H2 carb set up
Hi guys
Just joined ,so new to all this but hopefully may get help from a technical boffin.
Rebuilt 1971 H2 and going for mot in the morning, just not sure about the carb setting
Using the jets that were fitted,105 mains,35 pilots needles are on 3rd clip , any advice on what it should be would be a big help
If it sort of runs ok I will bring it to the mcn tomorrow as its only 15mins away.It has had the Chris Appleby treatment so all pretty tight.
Cheers

Re: H2 carb set up
That's a fair starting point but how does the bike run?
You only need to fiddle if the bike doesn't run well
Mraxl has some "readers settings".. in the "restoration & how to.." section.
This is the website for all Triplers..

Re: H2 carb set up
Hi guys
Got the h2 mot no prob, but right hand pot exhaust wasn't half chucking out smoke compared to the other 2.
Just wondered if it needs the oil pump mod.
Also going to set the carb clips to 2nd pos , but being run in may be better staying rich for a bit .
Cheers
Any help about the pump much appreciated

Re: H2 carb set up
It's not the pump.
If it does not clear after a mile or 2 its the right hand outer crank seal letting gear box oil into the crank case, disconnect the pump pipes , pull off the clutch cover, remove the primary gear and clutch complete, you then will see the seal, remove and replace , reassemble and replace the cover, job done.
For a '71 H2 you should be running on the 3rd or 4th groove on the needle from memory, if your sure the bike is rich enough mid range, then probably you have not rebuilt the carbs , and the needle jets and needles are worn

Re: H2 carb set up
It could, and most likely is the pump, the early H2's had issues with the right hand cylinder over oiling because of the end cap O ring on the pump failing, the rebuild kits are long gone . . .. .IF it is the crank seal, then I assume (?) that you just rebuilt the engine, if so, then you will certainly smell that the R/H cylinder is burning tranny oil instead of 2 Stroke oil - Good luck with it & keep us postedBarrie wrote:It's not the pump.
r
3rd or 4th Needle clip setting would be way too rich for normal use, especially with the 105 mains

hi rick are the pump rebuild kits the same as ah1 kit? if so i have some
also one thing to add have you checked the float hights they will balls things up if they are to high alsi are all the carb galleries free even if you have has them sonically cleaned they may still be blocked air passages

Hi ben the early settings were modified to 97.5 mains to stop them running rough at the bottom end mine runs on those and is now well sorted .

Re: H2 carb set up
If your carbs have the i.d H2,
the factory specs should be, 105 mains ,o-6 needle jets 5 fl14-2 needle, 35 pilot jets

Re: H2 carb set up
This why you need to know the carb id,
a '71 H2 is early and could possibly still have an early set of cylinders fitted.

Re: H2 carb set up
Early carbs where replaced under warranty because the heavy slides had a habit of snapping needles and the ending up wreaking the engine
The most important thing is to balance the carbs
H2 build quality varied greatly, what is good for one might not necessarily be good for the other, personally I would follow Ricks advice
As he has had more H2s than anyone else on this board
Just my 2p

Re: H2 carb set up
Hi guys
Been away, good to see the grey matter fully operational.
Lot of knowledge here.
It's a late 71 h2 , the carbs have h2 stamped on them.
I have changed the gasket and the fuel inlet valve, the floats are at approx 25mm just touching the valve spring. It did have 102.5 mains but ran erratically so I already had some spare 105 jets and swapped them but left the needles on the 3rd clip??
The engine has all new seals from jessbikes , crank balanced ,overhauled with labyrinth seals , rebore, wiseco Pistons ,
Just also noticed head gasket weeping so have taken the RHS pot off to re seal, all looks good in the cylinder.was worried I'd blown something from the smoke ,I think by the smell its Defoe the 2 stroke oil burning.i am just using fully synthetic oil I already had,
It's actually a bike Rick originally imported years ago.

Re: H2 carb set up
Well, I have an early H2 with the original carbs heavy springs and chrome plated slides, these are carbs marked with the id H2,modified carbs are marked H2-1, 2 or 4,so when tuning or rebuilding I have always started from the published factory carb specs which is on the resources sitescouse wrote:Early carbs where replaced under warranty because the heavy slides had a habit of snapping needles and the ending up wreaking the engine
