Historic- road tax

I just got a reminder for the road tax on my 1973 M registered S3. £38 for 12 months.
I know that it should be FOC now as it is historic. The V5 states," Declared manufactured 1973"
How do I get "historic" on the V5 so that I dont have to pay road tax?
Will the people at the post office know this and just "tax it""

Just fill out the v5 where appropriate (section 7)and
put in:
"Historic vehicle" in tax class*and take it to a post office
that does
Vehicle taxation and they will tax it, and they will also
send the v5 to dvla and in a coulple of weeks you will get...
An updated v5!

My H1E should be on historic tax this year and i tried to do it through the post office and they were having none of it - the system would not let him do it so he told me.
Reading on DVLA the fist time you apply for historic tax you have to send -

the V5 off to them with the part 7 changes to current vehicle filled in as historic
The current certificate of insurance, not a photocopy, a downloaded cop will be okay!
The current mot certificate
A filled in V10 form
The bike has to be manufactured or registered before 1 January 1975
Send this to DVLA as i have just done with mine - now waiting for a response from them

Well according to DVLA they have nothing to do with the Taxing of the vehicle and you MUST get it done by the post office before they send the V5 off.

The Post office should (has to) tax the vehicle on their system as Historic and then send the V5 to DVLA with the Section 7 filled in and signed and dated, hopefully they will then issue a new V5 and refund any Tax already paid for that period.

Unfortunately it seems some Post offices are unaware of the correct procedure I know this as I have sent mine off three times and have spoken to DVLA regarding this and that is what they informed me off.

On the third time of visiting the post office I made sure that my bike was entered on their computer system as historic before letting them stamp my V5 and send it off.I have now checked on the gov system and it was taxed from that date so i know the taxation class has changed.

However i am now still waiting for my new V5 and tax refund to come through.

I started my Historic Journey on the 07 May and have yet to arrive at my destination so good luck with yours

Just got all mine back from DVLA all sorted on historic tax

Early this year I went online to de-SORN my 74 H2B but the only option was to pay road tax. So I called the DVLA phone number for the Help(less) Desk spoke to a nice man who informed me I’d have to get proof of age and then submit that with the V form.

I pointed out that the bike was registered in the UK in 1974, and had continued to be registered in the UK since that date, this didn’t phase him, he said that wasn’t sufficient proof of its age.!!

I needed it on the road, so went back to the web site and paid the money with the intention of sorting it out later.

A month or two back I got a letter from the DVLA included a new V form with it listed as Historic.

After that I got a letter telling me I’d incorrectly tax my vehicle and I would receive a full refund of tax fee.

A week or two after sure enough I cheque dropped through the letter box
