Total fees to put a vintage bike on road

I'm curious what the total cost to road a bike is in the UK. Here, in MD my fees from the Motor Vehicle Administration run around $52 bucks a year for a modern bike and 26 bucks for a historic bike. How much are they over there?




Here's the breakdown of fees here:

One for modern bikes: (I'll use my Vstrom1000 as an example)

Title fee- $100
plus
Sales tax(6% of total cost) (one time fee only)
Total- $544

Inspection- $25-$40 (was carried by the dealer in my case)

Registration(tags)- $104 (for 2 years)

So to put it on the road legally, my total cost was $646 and that covered my for two years.

So the yearly costs ends up being $52 per year once you've titled it and insured it. I don't count the insurance as a MVA fee because it isn't but my policy on my Vstrom is $380 per year.

On a Vintage bike,(older than 20 years) you have the following:I'll use a buy price of $1500 since that's close to my avg cost to buy

Title fee- $100
Sales tax (6%) (one time fee only)
Total- $190

No inspection

Historic tag is $51 (for 2 years) Meaning you can only legally drive it on Sundays and to/from shows or events but it's RARELY enforced so all of my vintage bikes have historic tags.

So the yearly cost is $25.50 once you've titled and insured it. Basic liability is $44 per year but any damages to your bike are on your tab. Some of my bikes have basic insurance and some have specialty insurance which is much more expensive but covers the bike..

OK. Classic Tax Class over here is 1974 and prior, with a rolling qualification. So 1875`s come in around now.

We need an annual road safety check, called an M.O.T. which cost around £28 .

And that`s it. Our Title document is for the life of the vehicle. And our plates are too. So they don`t need updating.

If the vehicle is pre 1960 or maybe 61 now ( ? ) You also don`t need the MOT.

When we import a vehicle of historic tax class, our Initial registration costs £55 on top of that.

However we DO need to constantly insure them, or declare them Off Road if not re-taxing ( for free !! ) or we risk a fine for not taxing or declaring it off road..........DUH !!!

depends absolutly nothing if you already own the bike.
No test or check up or inspection.
Legally you should have an insurrance but cause I have vintage bike insurance I just pay for the first 3 bikes, 120 € a year 1st, 80 € a year 2d, 60 € the 3d, all others are free (basic insurance but I can go to work with the bike) :wink:
for exemple when I will rebuild my 71 H2 and will cost me to put it on the road: 0
In fact once you've got the title the authorities don't know if the car or bike is on the road or not and if you've an insurance or not excepted if the cops stop you on the bike of course, you should have one and show them the insurance. must have also a green tag on front mudguard with insurance numbers but forget very often to change it (too much bikes) and no trouble cops see the green tag and don't stop you in the trafic
If I buy a bike I must pay to have a new title with my name, depends of the cc and bike more than 10 years old pay half the price, depend of which county (additionnal taxes)
today in Paris if I buy a:
H1 the price for the new title with my name would be 74,76 €
H2 would be 87,76 €

new title is a one shot once I get the new title nothing more to pay each year or century

Neil - Didnt know they made bikes in 1875, but would av thought they were tax exempt before now though ??
