Had an email from guy that bought an H2c off me about 4/5 years ago:-
On preparing the bike for this season I have noticed that the back Avon Roadrider has developed cracks at the base of the centre groves up to a depth of 3mm. On doing some online research this has been an issue with this tyre and it seems to have been around 2009-2010?? The tyre is dated 2011 and presumably you would have had it fitted? Do you use this tyre and if so have you had any similar problems. I doubt I would have any claim as the tyre is almost 5 years old although it has probably covered less than 2000 miles. Can you remember who supplied you the tyre and your thoughts would be very welcomed. The front tyre is unaffected as with other cases mentioned online.
I did ring Avon up yesterday afternoon and eventually got to speak to somebody who was aware of the problem. They have advised me to get the tyre replaced at a reputable dealer/supplier as it will not last that long if water gets through to the steel banding, get the supplier to send the tyre to them, they will examine the tyre & if it falls within the problem date period they will re-emburse according to the amount of tread remaining, what I would like to know though is...who pays for the shipping?? I was advised though that the problem has now been resolved with a compound change, the tyre was going to be apparently deleted from the range as it was thought to be a bit dated but it had such a big following they decided to revamp the tyre with such things as a compound change.
Searching Google reveals lots of problems, here's one link that shows picture:-
