I finally got my twin front brakes fitted and the rain stopped long enough to go out and give them a test. First impressions are good - they are a massive improvement over the original single brake (as you would expect) and they are not noticeably worse than the modern Pretech six-pot calliper I had on before. They are going to need a fair bit of bedding in because at the moment at least two of the pads are only making about 60% contact with the rotor so I guess the performance can only improve with a bit of time. You can get the front tyre to squeal and lock up if you try hard but (it may be subtle) somehow they seem more sympathetic to the front end and suspension whereas the billet calliper felt like it was maybe a bit too powerful at times.

Anyway, to everyone who will maybe question why I put on Z1 brakes and ask why I don't just ride with the OE set up the answer is that with this I feel that I can stop in a decent distance when cars do stupid things and I can enjoy riding far more when I believe I can scrub off speed when I want to and not have that awful feeling of being woefully under-braked.

Great service from Power who were really helpful and corrected a few issues with the parts they supplied promptly and at no cost to myself. Only parts I was frustrated with was the steel sheet locking tabs for the disc retaining bolts which distorted and twisted when the bolts were torqued down tight - so badly that I ended up taking them all off again and reversing them so that then the distortion sort of made them straight again.

I got SO close to first start.....but alas, one carb adapter short. I must have easily a dozen or so carb adapters but was missing the one I needed!!

New ones from two different places are on the way....whichever arrives second will go into the "stash" as a spare.

Tank and tail are out but everything else is ready to go...........and they sure won't stop me from firing it up! Heck, I was sorely tempted to fire it on two....but decided to wait!

Those David Higgs specials sure do look nice!!

Did you have a pair of fork legs that were made for dual disks or did you have mounting lugs welded on?

The Lugs are already there.

I know some of the 750's had lugs on both legs and some other fork legs can be adapted to fit and some guys had a pair of lugs welded on to allow dual discs to be fitted.

All H series are lugged on both fork legs for an easy bolt on double disc conversion
All S series only have lugs on one leg and need the other leg modifying for double discs
(not counting the drum brake modles of course)

I received my carb adapter Weds and attempted "first start" but cheap coils prevented it. Last night, I swapped out the 3 coils then gave it 2 kicks with full choke and key off.....then i turned the key on, held the choke and it burst to life on the first kick!

While I held it at 2000 rpm I bled the oil pump then let it get completely warmed up before shutting it down. I went back downstairs late last night to re-torque the cylinders/heads. No evidence of any leakage despite the compression gauge showing an initial static reading of 180PSI, the result of oiled parts...it will drop once it's been run & if by chance it remains too high, I have an entire assortment of head gasket thicknesses to adjust it with. Present squish is .717mm so I can add another 8th of a mm and still have pretty good squish at .837mm

This little triple loves to rev! Paint people called yesterday and I'll receive my tailpiece and tank no later than Monday I think. I left the tank in CT because it had one 1.5x1.5" spot of rust on the top/left side. I figured that they could do a better job of matching it than I could.

I did notice that the tach is very slowly ramping up and down so I may have to remove and lube it.

Thanks for the information Hal.
Does this mean that I could use a H1A or H1 C fork leg on my KH400 as they all have 34mm diameter forks?
The later were 36mm so they would need more parts changing.

also relates to the H series as well as the S series. All the early H1's with the smaller fork legs are drum braked.

It would have bee a nice coincidence if the H1A or c had the twin disk lugs fitted- but as you made clear the earlier models were drum braked.
With the later models having larger diameter fork legs - that makes a swap more involved.

Had to visit one of our depots near Stafford recently so took the H1, about 95 miles round trip. Ran better on the way up in the colder air so a bit of tweaking probably required. By now it should have been sporting a nice new shiny set of Mr Higgspeeds finest GP pipes, but unfortunately er indoors decided we needed a long weekend in Menorca instead (b*llocks).

I have to say the weekend in Menorca was nice, but it didn't sound as good! Also won't now make the Northern either as it clashes with a 50th birthday weekend away (double b*llocks).

Have a good weekend boys, hope it stays dry.

This weekend has had it's ups and downs.

Saturday I took the White KH for a last spin out before it's dad came to take it home, I met him on our lane just returning..
In the Afternoon we paid a visit to the Northern Rally at MFNs.

Sunday I went to Barnsley Bike Festival, and chucked the S1c round their Kart track twice..

The White KH was there too, it Started and ran fine for him and we went to line up to go on the track. I could hear already that the centre cylinder was starting to misfire, a typical bad Plug misfire, so I hoyed the plug cap off and let the spark jump, it helped but didn't bring it to life and he went round on two cylinders then just coming off the track it died completely...
The Centre plug has some tiny pock marks and something stuck down the gap... what???
A new plug did nothing to bring it back to life even legging it round the car park only just got pops and not enough incentive to rev up, this fookin bike... GRRRRRR.
It will be coming back.. fks sake.

I'm just running out of ideas Jeff..

I had a problem with mine too.. just coming off the Hemsworth bypass she gave an almighty backfire, I felt it on my leg.. But the engine never missed a beat and continued as smooth as ever.. (I felt no need to stop).
When I got to site, I saw that the Generator Gasket was hanging out, this was already broken so this may (or may not) have any connection, it might simply have 'walked' out of the joint again, anyway this time I simply tore the loose bit off while being pictured for the "Kneeling Members" thread on another Forum where all ebarrassing roadside repairs are logged for everyones consumption.

So the Backfire is complete mystery, possibly the knackered old Points I put back on last year.
