The seal is shot, and fuel mixture got in the stator area and ignited. Blew out the gasket......

Rode out to the races, only about 40 miles round trip Did a few wheelies and ran up to 90 mph a couple of times to get the oil out....... :-P

Hi John, I hope not, I only replaced it about 2 months ago because there was oil in the Generator at that time..
There was no difference in performance or engine note at the time, she just carried on (whistling and looking upwards).

I'll have another investigation next time I'm in the garage.

Hi Hal, thanks again for the info!
It would have bee a nice coincidence if the H1A or c had the twin disk lugs fitted- but as you made clear the earlier models were drum braked.
With the later models having larger diameter fork legs - that makes a swap more involved.

You can swap the whole H1 500 disc version front end onto an S series. You`ll get the bigger forks, bigger brake , AND/But a bigger front wheel too. 19".
You certainly would need to go to twwin discs, as lighter weight of the 400 means the bigger single disc will stop it well enough .

Then just get ready for everyone telling you it`s not standard !!

Odd that single backfire ... but with what happened to the center cylinder, that could not have been caused by a failed left side seal.....you do have some investigation! Almost sounds like one of the points backplates moved?


Got my repaired(paint) fuel tank yesterday....it's the bomb! Taking the S1/2 out of my shop to the street this weekend!

I doubt Jeff could analyse your bike from the other side of the pond Wolfie?

We`ve seen an S2 overoiling , and blowing it`s crankseal out. That goes with a pop , and THEN you deffo get oil in the gennie cover !!!
If I was being silly , I could predict that then on the upward stroke, the suction can pull the seal back into place. And it carries on running as normal. Hence one backfire ..............................can you believe that ???

Anyway, only way you`d work it out , is to pull and split the motor. But if it is working ok now. I`d just leave it till it breaks again. And carry your AA recovery card with you !!!

That white one on the other hand. That needs pulling right down !!!!!

I think Jeff just confused the two bikes..

Meantime, I've just been and removed the points cover, there is the very slightest amount of oil wetness in there, I'd be surprised if this isn't simply what's left over from the previous seal.

It seems either the seals nowadays are not up to snuff, or the possible ethanol is causing problems. As I have had seals go out prematurely. And the "POP" is not uncommon with a bad seal and a sparkie stator. The blown out gasket is a give away. You can clean the area real well, keep an eye on the plug for whiteness, and check from time to time for oil residue in the ignition side. The only other thing, which is very rare is gas getting in through the wiring plug from a leak and getting combustion in the stator.

I could hear already that the centre cylinder was starting to misfire, a typical bad Plug misfire, so I hoyed the plug cap off and let the spark jump, it helped but didn't bring it to life and he went round on two cylinders then just coming off the track it died completely..."

I forgot that you have one that looks like mine! Or is it that I have one that looks like yours? LOL The white one was the one that you were fixing for a friend?

I still need to install the rebuilt petcock and am waiting for the latch pin but set the tank in place for a mock-up this morning....first pic taken with everything on it!

Thanks Bic...........you mean Malc actually printed that tripe? LOL....I haven't received my magazine yet.

Wolfie.....is there supposed to be any clip that secures the S1C tank into position? I have the correct original rubber with the slot and the tank slips in nice and tightly into place but I can't help but feel that something should be going thru the hole in the lug that fits into the slot, is there?

Nope that downward "tongue" that goes through the big flat rubber damper is all there is at the rear.

Mileage is just coming up to 50K

She was somewhere just short of 30K by 1980, so in the last 35 years I've done about 2/3rd of the mileage I did in the first 5!

Thanks. I had searched but that's one view rarely posted! The two parts books didn't show anything either...still, I wanted to be sure since I'm going to put fuel into it tonight.

Suzuki T500. Kicked it over and it only fired on one cylinder. When I turned on the lights it cut out. As I had just taken off the headlamp to give the insides a blast of WD40 I presumed that I had disconnected a wire or shorted one out in there somewhere. Checked all the connections, still no joy, just firing on the one. Threw teddy in corner and left it for a few weeks. This time it wouldn't start at all. Checked battery and it was flat. Put it on charger, but the charging light would not come on. Tried the charger on another battery - fine. Connect the bike to the battery from another bike, fired up first time on both cylinders and everything works as it should. The battery, although brand new, had been sat for about 3 years. It initially accepted a charge enough to run the bike, but when it went flat again that was it. Acid must have done the plates whilst it was sat idle. Funny how it had the power to run the bike on one though.
