Higgspeed Pipes

Hi guys. I've got a 1974 H1E US Import that I'm restoring (with much help from such stand up guys like Neilthedon and Tangoman).

I'm putting some new parts where needed (shocks, rims, grabrail, ignition/seatlock. cables and levers), and restoring full motor and carbs, all brightwork re-chromed, tank/sidepanels/tailpiece to be painted, frame blasted and re-coated etc.

My biggest snag is the exhausts. My right hand pipe has been bashed at the end and needs a bit of work and the other 2 look OK, but I'm struggling to find someone who can do the work and get them chromed - so I'm considering going for a set of Higgspeeds. What are people's thoughts on this? I hear you need to lose the centre stand to fit Higgspeeds - but also been told that H1s don't like living on their sidestand - can anyone confirm their experiences please? Lastly and less importantly - do non standard pipes have much impact on a restored bike's value?

If your going to use the side stand only , remove any of the play out of the pivot .

Hi,i recently fitted HIGSPEED pipes to my 450cc 1978 triple. Not an easy job, no instructions or tips from HIGSPEED . I had to remove the centre stand, I have seen pictures of bikes with the centre stand intact. I miss the centre stand and may have another try later.
I have three cone filters fitted and with the HIGSPEEDS the bike sounds awesome from 5000 revs on, blip the throttle, great sound. Not sure about the need for slip joints ,springs etc. I had to purchase some spacers as with the flanges supplied the studs run out of thread..
The pipes look great, mine are the upswept ones.
I am surprised you are unable to find a restoration service for your exhaust, I had no trouble finding the services on line.

It may be possible to fit the centre stand with a modification to accommodate the Higgspeed pipes, that is what I meant.

I had Higgspeeds on my H1e. I found them too loud ( but fun for a while ) and the folks following me found them way too loud . They didn't allow the use of a centre stand , which I found frustrating. The side stand allows too much lean and encourages the carbs to leak so if you do have to use it try to find a bit of wood to prop up the stand a bit.
Unless you have an exceptional example I don't think Higgspeeds would have much negative impact on value . You will struggle to find decent originals or to find someone willing to repair and rechrome your exhausts. Its a perennial problem/holy grail in the triples world.

I run Higgspeeds Ive got the longer baffles but you can still hear me coming Ok you cant use a centre stand but if I need to do some work on the old girl pipes off centre stand on in under 10 mins
As for too much lean on the side stand fit a side stand from a S3 400 they are longer

Hello, there appears to be a problem with the chroming of used silencers, they will contaminate the bath, I was not aware of this problem. Sorry I misled you.

Works for me Neil - many thanks. I'll push my luck and ask if there's any chance of bringing the fork stanchions and seals with you when you come to pick up the motor? That way the big skinny hippy can get on with the front end whilst you're beavering away Thanks again mate.
