Paint chip - repair advice please

Hello all
H2C - Candy Purple
Malc Anderson sold me the perfect bike and I am delighted. Unfortunately and I do not know how it happened, but a piece of paint right on the top curved edge of the tank where it is sculptured in to contour the headstock, has come away. About 20mm x 3mm right on the edge. I know the local mobile paint repair guy, I have used him before and he is very good - he does not feel he can do this.
I have tried to upload a photo but it has too many pixels and the instructions on how to do this are not understandable for me - I am a Luddite.
If you know someone that could make this repair, please let me know. The bike is mint and I am really gutted this has happened. Thanks in advance, Simon.

It's dead easy to chip a tank at that point when fitting or removing the tank. It's probably not so much an expert job, but more an uphill job with potential for disaster at every turn, Mr Chips possibly wouldn't want to make your chip into a full paint job

If the base colour is still present, you could try building up the level with clear laquer a thin layer at a time (a very fine artists brush can get it into the corners without spreading onto the surface).

Then when it is level or slightly proud, TCut or similar should be able to make it almost invisible.

If the colour has gone then you can only minimise how visible it will be, colour base first then as above.

But whatever path you take, keep it warm and dry until the repair process begins.


The Forum will resize imges automatically but there are limits, I did some tests when it was first implemented.. Results will be on here somewhere. If it is outside those limits then you will have to resize it, almost every image software package and probably even your phone will be able resize images.

Hello all thanks for your help and advise - really appreciated. I have contacted Ritchie and sent him photos. In the meantime, my wife is going to her nail bar with a side panel under her arm! Will cost me a nail paint but might be money well spent. Will let you know how I get on. Thanks Simon.

It's nothing to write home about, just the same image uploaded several times in various sizes but all made the same size by the Forum software.

Yes I see RS paints can supply although they say the Candy Purple (dark) is a 2 paint + lacquer application where Kawasaki official colour is listed as a 3 paint process; gloss black + flair silver pearl + candy purple + lacquer. A bit confusing for me although I may have it wrong?

Hi Simon.

I had exactly the same problem with my bike which is also a purple H2c. I can also tell you that my chip in that place was caused inadvertently when I removed the tank one time and just got the angle wrong as I tried to lift it off the front rubber mounts. I'm sure this was the way your chip happened also.

I bought a three part paint touch up kit from a guy at Stafford show a few years ago. It has a black base, a purple mid-coat and a top clear coat. It's a very good match and although it took some time an patience to build up the layers you can't see the repair very easily.

I can't remember the name of the company but it's on the bottles so I will have a look when I'm next down at my workshop. They are a specialist paint matching company who sell all sorts of vintage match repair kits. Definitely sells them mail order so you can just get them sent through the post.
