Dunstall rear sets on an H2c

Post by Bic_Bicknell »

Got a set of Dunstall rear-sets from Malc Anderson a few weeks ago - always wanted a set and not many come up for sale anymore.

Fitted on quite straight forward but I am very fussy about the ergonomics of my foot levers because I have a
limited movement on my left ankle from old bike injuries and pins etc. The design of these makes it hard to get the lever angle right without the end hitting the silencer. At the start I had to lift my whole leg off the peg to change down and so I started to remove metal bit by bit off the lever end and rubber until it started to be ridable.

The last few weeks I've been testing and gradually removing more and more metal! Finally I have something that works for me -looks a bit extreme but when it's on the bike you hardly notice and there is still plenty of good metal and strong weld so there's no chance of the toe bit snapping off.

Riding position is very different from the OE footrest position as they are at least 160mm set back. Once you get used to it they are much better in my opinion, but then I'm also used to riding modern sports bikes that have pretty high rear-set footrest positions anyway. If I put on ace bars or clip-ons these will work way better with that set up than the original pegs. With the standard set up I always felt that I was sitting with my feet really forward and put my toes on the pegs anyway, with these it just feels better for fast road riding, changing gear and cornering.

One downside is that the brake lever is considerably shorter than OE so there is a lot of leverage missing and so the back brake is not as effective. Hard to lock the back wheel up now unless I really put all my full weight on the lever! Don't think I will miss it much though, it's still great for slow riding / balancing etc. which is all I used it for anyway really.

Ha ha!

I don't think there were any, no one has anything to say. I think it's because everyone likes stock bikes and fitting rear-sets is sacrilege to many.

I'm collecting bits so I can fit drop handlebars and take off the indicators and mirrors. That will probably dismay everyone too but I just find that riding about on a stock bike sort of offends the memory I have of triple ownership in the 70s and 80s. I only managed about six months with stock pipes before I replaced them with Higgspeeds and have never regretted it.

I want my bike to sort of be the bike I would have wanted to look at in a car park when I was 17, not something that looked like it just came out of a showroom. I've got all the standard bits carefully wrapped up and stored away so If I ever sold it I could easily change it all back to the way it was.

Here's my S3 in about 1980 going through the transformation from stock bike to the way we wanted them to look. If I remember right I'd just managed to find a second hand set of Swarbrick chambers and was in the process of fitting pod air filters and the carbs were off for an overhaul. It had a modified, home made seat and the tail piece was angled up with spacers. Everyone did this, it's just what you did!

Yep. We all did something similar.

Ace bars, TZ front mudguards, avon roadrunners , S&w rear shocks, LE Sports, K&N'S filters , and KH clocks and disc brake front end on earlier drum brake models.
Meanwhile throwing away rear mudguards, centre stands , original clocks and pipes etc etc

but we now know that some of those mods were detrimental to performance, and nowadays. As we are all Old Fogies, a more sensible standard bike , ridden in a milder manner. Tends to suit our creaking limbs and razor blunt reactions !! ( and of course , standard means more valuable, not that anyone on here EVER thinks about any of that old man capatilism / investment opportunity B- S ?!)

I spent ages in the 70s trying to find some decent rear sets for my S2 . Raask. Versions were horrible. with huge cast alloy mounting plates . yuck. and others seemed just too high up . Obviously not designed for a 6ft 2 bloke !!

Eventually did get some tidy ones that mounted in the rear footrest bracket triangle . But it was pretty impractical in town . clip ons and rear sets were a pain.

When to go for drop bars on an H2 you are probably better using Ace bars, as the vibration through the clip ons would be murder.

Just Remeber the most important other features to go with the period look. a Fringed Lewis Leather , and some Wrangler flares , so the flare catches on the footrest/ kickstart every time you start the bike up.

Essential that !!

I still had one of those until a year or so ago but decided to eBay it because they were going for so much money. Fitted my daughter but she wasn't interested, (bet she'll regret that decision one day!)

They shrink with fear, normally after a panic braking moment or pivoting frame moment
