HELP! Broken down, need advice :)

Fit a new set of spark plugs.
Take off ignition cover & have a close look at the stator.
Unplug the right hand handle bar switch in the headlight, this will cut off
the kill switch. The kill switch is prone to shorting when wet giving ignition problems.
There is aprox 300 volts at the kill switch when the engine is running.

Stupid question time - have you checked that the rotor has not come loose ??

The smoke could be diesel residue and the backfire could be ignitioin related.

Hard to say this far away.

Have a look at the oil pump to see if it is stuck wide open.

I suggest taking the the genny cover off
I suspect that there's water in there, especially if you have both gaskets fitted for the genny covers

Try new plugs before you do anything else though as it sounds like it is trying to fire. The diesel has probably goosed them.

I was thinking water in the fuel. It doesn't take much and unlike diesel it does settle to the bottom of the float chambers and crankcases where it causes all kinds of weird running, but having now viewed the video the smoke isn't white enough for water contamination and I'm back to the diesel consensus. Nice little side track to meander down though.

Bic,dont worry,that is the residue of diesel on the rings,the crank cases ,the carbs,take it up the road and thrash the tits off it,
going to the RD rally with blackhat,we stopped for fuel,left the fuel station and blackhat was behind on his h2,looked in my mirror and saw smoke and thought,he is giving it some stick,smoke was white and getting worse,looked in the mirror then no blachat!!
we dumped the fuel,took a bit of time to restart on fresh fuel,the bike stank and smoked all the way from Berwick to Durham.the back of the bike was minging of diesel but very clean!!!!

It will need a good ride around to clear any diesel from the internals..

Luckily, they're trying to get diesels off the road so it's a diminishing problem.

Then it'll be.. "you charged up with the wrong type of electricity sir"..

Diesel is still the main suspect and now it could do with a plug change, I'm not happy about the backfiring which is pointing to ignition, the plugs could cure it and give it a good run.

If not, disconnect the black / white wire from the ignition box which will eliminate water in the kill switch and ignition switch, check the ignition box earth. Take the rotor cover off and the problem will likely be apparent, the water could just be a coincidence - loose triggers or plate, maybe even just filled with water . . . . Good luck

GOOD NEWS!

All running well and correct now. HUGE THANK YOU to Dave (Big H) for taking the time to drive for over an hour to bring tools, spark plugs, strobe light and even a replacement KZ750 kick-start lever and a whole lot of experience, advice and practical help. It's this sort of culture that makes this club worth being a part of and I hope I can pay it back some day to others.

The original problem was obviously diesel (still can't believe I did this ) but the plugs I had were ruined and as soon as we fitted a new set the bike ran OK if very, very smoky. A quick blast up the road and the smoke had disappeared. Dave checked and reset the timing (which was out a bit) and now the bike idles cleaner and hopefully all is well with no permanent damage to anything other than my pride.

So now I'm on for the Southern Rally again (although the weather tomorrow looks terrible) but the fact that my bike is OK again I don't care, I'd happily ride around all weekend in the rain just to enjoy being on a healthy engine again. Ha ha.

I had a similar issue when someone bought me a pint of beer but it was the wrong type. This stuff was lager. I struggled to run cleanly for a while but once proper beer was put in the tank, normal service was resumed, no damage done!
