Old picture of my S3

Post by Bic_Bicknell »

Here's a picture of my purple S3 with my then girlfriend Mary at the top of Beacon Fell, Lancashire in about 1981. She went on to take her HGV and become a truck driver. Before anyone asks it used to be a candy red S3 before I went under a lorry and had to repair and repaint. Back then the only choice for me (at 17 years old) was what the local car shop had so this was a rattle can job in metallic purple with hand done stripes and lettering.

I believe it was written off by the guy I sold it to. I was hankering after one of the new four stroke Kawasakis, the 400J - it was a copy of the 400/4 Honda but in the style of all the big Z fours at the time. This lad in the village got a brand new one and promptly binned it with minor damage to the front end and handle bar area so I sold my beautiful S3 and bought his wreckage and put it back on the road. The guy I sold the 400 to had it for a week and then weelied it over the rise where the A6 crosses the Garstang canal and hit a lorry and I believe it was a total write off.

It became one of the biggest regrets of my biking career.

The modern Kawasaki in line four was so boring compared with my old S3. It may have had more modern running gear, better brakes, better suspension, better spec everything but it was boring compared to the smooth and exhilarating power of the S3. I this k it was the first time I really got to know an IL4 and I've always hated them ever since.

Yep,I had the Z500 after my S1C,thought that was the future over the KH/H1 500 decision.Great brakes and suspension I remember and it had a very noisy Alfa 4-1 exhaust but ultimately boring ( never broke down ).Perhaps that's why decades later I'm here trying to get my 'barn find' on the road :?
