S2 350 Electronic ignition
Hi,
I have just recently bought a lovely 1972 S2 350.
Currently it is running on points but I was wondering if it is worth fitting some form of electronic ignition for reliability purposes.
Has anyone done this, and if so what system is recommended ?
Thanks,
Bob

Simons (G6MOW) Accent ignition seems to be popular

I’ll be interested to see how you get on with this as I’ve just bought a basket case S2A and the points are totally wrecked.

Re: S2 350 Electronic ignition
Just a word of caution - I have fitted a Boyer Bransdon Electronic Ignition on a KH250 in the past and reverted back to points in the end as, if the batterry is a little bit low, it started to misfire (even when doing simple things like turning the indicators on). It may have been caused by something else, however, the problem did not reoccur once back to points....

Common problem with a boyer ignition. they work great though with a good battery.

Re: S2 350 Electronic ignition
I believe the Boyer issue is caused by the fact that it sparks 3 times for each revolution of the crank (i.e. all 3 plugs fire simultaneously 3 times per rev). This needs a good battery and charging system to achieve.
The Accent system only fires each plug once per rev, and so doesn't draw as much from the battery.
I fitted one to my S3 (see above link) and once set up it's been perfect ever since.

Fitted a Boyer to my S2. Can't comment on battery life/misfires as I don't do a lot of miles, but it does work.

Chaps,
Thanks so much for all of the advice, I’ll get myself an Accent system as that sounds to the best solution. I’m more than capable of fitting it (I think ! ), but would the ignition timing need re-setting, if so is there anyone you can recommend that I can take it to in the Colchester area who could do that for me as I wouldn’t feel comfortable doing it.
Thanks again.

Re: S2 350 Electronic ignition
If you can actually fit the Accent system (it's fairly straightforward but a bit more involved than say a Dyna S on a Z1000) then you should have no problem getting the timing set up statically. The bike should run well just like that, and you can take it from there?
There is a press-fit part to the Accent rotor. If you know this then it's easy enough to fit, but the instructions don't mention this anywhere and you might think it doesn't fit properly ! (but it does)
