Early S2 Speedo/Tacho damping needed.

Post by Baff1960 »

Hi there.

Noticed that my 71 S2 NOS speedo and tacho lacking damping on longer ride outs. Any advice to fix without having to unmould the retaining lip on the plastic covers would be appreciated.

Cheers Alan

Hi Tony.

Thanks for that. Saw you article in the club mag detailing the disassembly/assembly of the plastic shrouds. I might end up going there but still mulling it over. Will chat to Alan first to pin point the damping solution.

Have you tried greasing the cable?

The needle rides in a cavity that is filled with a grease. If that grease has seeped out, the result is rapid needle bounce.
It can only be corrected with total disassembly and cavity fill with proper grease.

Is it not damping oil Dale? I thought it is quite thin, so when you leave the clock on its side or upside down it can leak out, but I have never stripped one down that far.

It is a grease but viscosity and amount is critical.

I had a similar problem a few years ago and found a solution on another forum.
You need to get some silicone model car diff oil (30000 cst viscosity) and basically you strip down the speedo/tac and refill the damping chamber with the oil.
I thinK i used a small syringe.
Its a bit fiddly but can be done.
Must be 10 years ago and the needles are still spot on with no flutter.
Got mine on the interent from core-rc.com.

Hi.

Thanks for the info. I have an old Tacho I've taken apart and that's good for a test bed so will experiment on it.

Hi.

Had a look at my spare Tacho which has almost no damping at all. Examined what was left of the damper pot contents. Looks to be thick oil. Have acquired some CORE-RC 30000 oil which is very viscos. Will
test it soon as the weather improves.

Maybe test it with a drill?
