Ride out stopped with a puncture

Post by Collyolly »

Hi All
I am sure this has been discussed before but I can’t find it, what would you do -
On Sunday we went out for a 20 mile ride, stopped at a nice Cafe and as I turned away from my bike I saw a screw head sticking out of the middle of the rear tire, the tire deflated as we looked at it and then it was ‘Oh Fxxk what do we do now ?’
After thinking about our predicament for a few minutes I decided to phone a friend (Wife, lovely girl ) to come and get me so I could go home and come back with my trailer to recover the bike.
Then we thought why not phone ‘International rescue’ our mate Steve with a van to come and get me and save the Wife the trouble, he is up for any excuse to take the Pixs out of our old bikes.
So I cancelled the Wife, got Steve to go to my house for the scissor jack stand, tools and straps, my bike has pipes, no centre stand and his van is too short to get the whole bike in.
Meantime we realised we were near a petrol station so my brother suggested we try some of the instant tire repair that he had seen, he went and got a tube and sure enough it certainly inflated the tire, but over the next couple of minutes it all leaked out and the tire was flat at the bottom again!
Long story short, Steve rescued me and my brother followed us home on his RD, kept him in sight as it’s the first ride out where he had not had some sort of problem.
All good fun, but I don’t want to go through that again, what do you all do ? Anyone can get a puncture, I am going to look into my insurance policy tomorrow to see if it includes or could include some form of roadside recovery.
Cheers

A lot of classic policies include breakdown cover for free, but I've never used mine. It's quicker to get a lift home and get the van.
There are sealants such as "Slime" or "Goop" that work with tubed tyres, but you generally put them in before a puncture. The danger is that you may be hurtling along with a puncture without knowing it!

Got a puncture a few weeks ago, managed to get to a petrol station but couldn't inflate it.
Called the AA and they turned up after 20min and took me home Thumbs Up

Did the AA use a van or a trailer ?
That does seem like a very fast response and very lucky for you.

In 2011 I picked up a screw in the rear tyre of my GPZ and had to pump it up every few days. I just left it in. It was even in when we went to Spa in 2012. Many months later I was on my way to the Northern rally at MFN when the screw came out in the fast lane of the M1 and I had to navigate my wobbly way to the hard shoulder. With no recovery options I limped along the hard shoulder to the nearest exit and found a service station, pinched a large self-tapper out of their cladding and screwed it into the vacant hole in the tyre. Pumped the tyre back up and went on my way

Because I'm famously irresponsible?

I put some stuff called 'Bike Seal' in my tubed tyres, I bought it at the Classic Bike show Stafford some years ago, I have just (a month ago) bought another bottle from them but it hasnt arrived, their web site is down due to 'technical problems' and his phone permanently engaged, whether I eventually get the stuff who knows?

A shame really as I knew nothing about the rear puncture I had picked up until I decided to swap my rear wheel with a rebuilt one and for the life of me I couldnt get the tube out of tyre when I came to do the swap due to a medium sized nail and a little of the 'Bike seal' holding the tyre and tube together.

A little 'which would you rather have moment' really as
a) I had been riding around with a puncture I knew nothing about
b) I never got stranded anywhere or had that horrible tyre falling off rim as it defleated

For those of us that have had a blow out with a tubed tyre it is not something you would like a second experience of

I have always carried a repair kit when touring, but on rides at home i rely on breakdown cover if i cant ride it home, tried the squirty stuff a couple of times without success.
