12 months with an H1a

Post by skub »

It's been a year now since the H1 arrived and took me back to 1971. I've clocked over 3k miles going nowhere in particular, just enjoying the wheels turning, the smoke and the noise.

I bought the bike with the intention of punting it on if I found I wasn't having fun of any kind, but the whole experience of riding and maintaining a 53 year old bike has been most pleasurable. This has been helped,no doubt,by the H1 being very reliable to date,I daresay my feelings may have been different if I'd bought a troublesome one. Pete built a good bike. 8)

During the first year of ownership I've encountered some great people, some in real life and some as pixels. I've never been much of a one for biker gatherings, but I still get plenty of time to ride on my own and I'm finding I enjoy the company of other classic bike owners too. It has inadvertently added a new colour to the biking palette for me. Perhaps I'm mellowing in my old age,not being such an asocial twunt all the time. :D

I have toyed with the idea of selling the Zed and buying another triple, but I think I'd miss a modern machine for those longer trips and not wondering when 50+ y/o electrics may shit the bed at a less than convenient moment. So the Zed stays for now. I also thought about buying another triple and keeping the Zed,but 3 bikes would start to be crowded in my garage, especially if I needed to do any work,so unless something tempting falls in my lap,I'll stick with 2 bikes in the meantime.

I've yet to fully understand why I love the bike,it has pretty much all the attributes of a machine anyone in their right mind would want to trade in for something better asap. Favourite daughter was of the opinion my ownership wouldn't last 6 months.

Folk ask me what I like about the H1 and I end up talking random bollox without actually answering the question, because I don't honestly know the answer.

Is it fast?..it was in 1971,but now? Nope
Does it handle well?...if you remember it's limitations and age...
Are the brakes adequate?...barely to nope.
Is it easy on the juice?....mostly nope.
Does it make me smile? I can't help myself ffs. :D

I know what you mean Davy so I have given up trying to explain it to people when asked why I love these old girls and now just say it's because they just put a big smile on my face every time I ride one Thumbs Up

Yes it's difficult to explain to people. For most of us, I guess it started when we were 16/17 and first heard/saw/smelt one? :D

Mine started (someone correct me here) it must have been 1969, 70 or maybe 1971, I would be 15 going on 16, I was walking back from the local Baths after our Sunday morning training session, this took us past Bill Smiths Motorcycles and we always had our noses pressed againt the glass windows as he was closed on Sundays, but this day was different, Bill Smith was outside with a red Kawasaki 350 triple showing it off to someone, giving it quite a few revs, I believe it was the first 350 in the country and was heading for the IOM TT to be raced.

It started there, I so so nearly bought a 500 triple second hand in 1975, I remember the reg, FTB 54J, a short test ride made me realise it was a bit lethargic and a bit scary fast when it wasnt being lethargic and not what I needed for the daily trip to work, I bought a Honda 500/4, followed by a 750/4 and more bikes that I could list here (about 50 I think) but there was always this fascination for a Kawasaki triple.

And now here we are 50 years later, I still have this Kawasaki triple fascination, but now also have one in the garage, (H2C) I agree with all the points the OP made

It's the whole riding experience, the induction raw, the 2 bikes in one
Ideal to potter around town
Brilliant when you open the throttle and it lifts it's skirt
I deliberately sit at 30 mph when I know I'm coming up to the part of my ride home that hits the national speed limit
One guy was right up my arse in his flash BMW (probably thanking I wish this old coger on his G reg bike would get out my way, he's probably going as fast as the bike will go) I hit the national speed limit Sign ( not literally) dropped it 2 and covered the beemer in a cloud of fog
I didn't see him for around a mile, when I again slowed down and he caught me up, surprisingly he wasn't following as close this time!!

I do that with the throttle when someone is too close with a touch of brake as well
