KH400 PIPES RECHROME

Post by Stephen W »

Hi ALL,
New to the club. Just attempting my first 2 stroke resto 1978 kh400. Any help/comments would be appreciated.
Bike stood since 2001. Presume it will require full strip down/crank rebuild? Very original incl pipes.
RH cyl pipe is good and solid but chrome peeling. Any advice on good rechroming suppliers/cost would be appreciated and also cleaning methods prior to re chrome.
Thank you

Hello mate and welcome to the club. LOTS of information and help here. If your pipes are not dented and need no repairs then look at about £300 a pipe. Only a few places do 2 stroke pipes because they contaminate the tanks.....most do them do it when the tanks get a change of chemicals......more members will chime in I'm sure. Well done for saving another one. Out of all the stuff done in a resto its chroming that adds up. Paintwork next... then a crank rebuild.....then a rebore and new pistons and rings.....oh and new rims and spokes and tyres etc etc. BUT .......don't fret and give up......its the satisfaction of seeing something coming back to former glory that counts mate. Don't do it to make money.....you won't as you need to be geared up to do that. The 400 is possibly the best compromise in the triples lineup....good handling and a pokey engine .....oh and about 30mpg   Good luck mate. Rob Thumbs Up

Magneto coils for the ignition in the stator are a common problem, Fit a new set.
