New member looking for some help

Post by Mike Steer »

Hey everyone. Some advise please. I have recently purchased a 1972 H2 750, imported from the USA (see attachments). I have no information as to what has been done to it mechanically, if anything, in the past, but I do know that the bike hasn't run for many many years. I don't know why the bike was parked up for so long, whether it was through mechanical failure/frustration, or the owner lost some interest in riding it? My plan is to strip the bike down and rebuild from the floor up using as many original parts as possible. To the point. I decided that I would try and get the bike running. After checking everything out: electrics (now working) no excess oil in crankcase, carbs rebuilt, float heights checked and adjusted, new battery and plugs. Spark at plugs. Plenty of compression. I took advise from several Kawasaki sites and YouTube videos available.

Bike won't start. One of the float heights wasn't closing off (a small piece of plastic stuck around the valve shut off seat) which resulted in excess petrol overflowing into the 'casting well' underneath the carbs and onto the garage floor by the morning. Re checked carbs, float heights and put back onto bike. I see this morning there is still some petrol leaking from somewhere but a much much maller amount, however still not good enough. The problem I appear to have is that I'm not getting any petrol to the combustion chamber/plugs. I take the plugs out and they are dry, all 3 of them. No smell or sign of petrol getting that far. That's where I am at the moment. Your thoughts

In the past I have rebuilt many British bikes so I am very familiar with the rebuild process, and tend to do everything myself, apart from spraying and any mechanical work I haven't got the engineering machinery for. I thought I'd try a two stroke for a change and a fresh challenge

I set the float heights up using methods I found on Kawasaki sites

You rebuilt the Carbs but did you check all the orifices were clear? I expect you did the obvious ones (jets). But...

In the Float Bowl bottom casting there is a brass Jet which is the fuel feed for the Choke, if that is blocked then the bike will be very reluctant to start.

In the inlet tract (where the air comes in from the filter) there is one tiny jet that needs to be clear.

In the outlet tract to the Cylinder Manifold, there is a diagonal orifice from the Pilot jet which bypasses the throttle slide, if blocked this will also make the bike very difficult to start.

Higgsy did a good article on setting up and cleaning carbs. Will see if I can find it.

The exhausts could be blocked, you could leave the downpipes attached and see if it starts?
