Matching Numbers - Definition
Hi
I'm sure someone can clarify this for me. Definition of matching numbers.
1. Is it were the frame and engine are exactly the same.
2. If they are different, but the V5 reflects this. Is this "matching"
3. And finally if the V5 numbers do not reflect what's on the bike do I need to let the DVLA know.
Thanks in advance for you response.
Mike

Hi Mike, it is very rare for triples to come out of the factory with matching numbers.
The engine numbers generally lagged a little behind and tended to get further behind as the production run ran. Presumably because they were making spare engines for replacement or warranty claims?
Whatever your numbers, they should match what is on the V5 and you should inform DVLA.

Rick Brett will tell you what your engine number should be if you message him on here with your frame number

Re: Matching Numbers - Definition
It terms of Kawasaki triples, 'matching numbers' means 'The engine number that was in that frame when it left the factory'.
The numbers may be anything from literally matching (rare, but in some models they're much closer than others), to being a couple or so thousand apart.
If it's got its original crankcases, it's considered matching. They do follow vague patterns so can be predicted from the records of existing bikes. Rick is your man for accuracy but most experienced triple people can make a fair stab at a ballpark figure.

Greetings I thought that frame numbers generally lagged behind a little for the reason you mentioned. Am I mistaken?

Hi John, welcome to the Forum.
Yes, the numbers were never actually "matching" but considered matching if they are withing the correct range for that production line.

This is the best bet to cross check your engine to frame, if itβs within these parameters then you can call it matching in my eyesskub wrote: βWed Feb 11, 2026 11:47 am This part of the resources was a help for me.

You could also, or used to be able to, get a certificate direct from Kawasaki UK. I have one with engine and frame numbers (H2C) and gives the exact build date. I believe it was a service you had to pay for - around Β£50.

Re: Matching Numbers - Definition
Noticed that the frame and engine number could be sometimes lower fot the frame and sometimes for the engine
for exemple you have H2F 00785 with H2E 00798 but H2F 00808 is with H2E 00778.

OR You could always ask me? I have been collecting engine and frame numbers for 50 Years and I believe I have the largest Kawasaki Triple (and others) Database in the World
