developed a real big smoke screen recently from the right pot on my h2..is this the dreaded crank seal dry up?..took the clutch of ect and replaced the outer right crank seal but i also came across a rubber "o" ring which i did not know about ..could not find one at useal web sites ..its 24mm ,anyway i put the new crank seal in and used the original "o ring...bikes still pushing out the same smoke , would that "o ring be crucial or is it prob the inner seal anyway?..depressed in feb thanks guys.

right hand seal gone they are tricky to fit but with care and the rubber ring MUST be fitted with care

What does the collar inside the seal look like ?

That O ring has to be the correct diameter for a good tight fit and the correct size or it will either stretch and leak or it will crumple and also leak.

It could simply be worn and yes, that cylinder will smoke if either the seal or the O ring leaks.

the seal and collar looked ok with no signs of failure in fact i felt like i had replaced like for like..but i re used the original "o ring and i still have the smoke..ive never had to do a crank before ,what sort of price will it be if i have to replace the seals ?can this be done or is it a send away jobby..

The problem is probably in the oil pump. There two o rings that seal the rh outlet (the bit added on the end of the pump). As they are compressed in different ways, just swapping them over can effect a repair!!!

Two small Phillips screws to remove the RH feed cover off the pump!!

That could be it as well. Are you burning gear oil or two stroke oil ?

thanks for all the help guys...im going to check the pump today<i would never have dreamed of looking there>...ive allways thought it is gear box oil burning because of the different smoke?..i did change the clutch cover last year for a "better" looking one and the pump sits on that so anything in that as the smoking " did come along just after..cheers pete.

I had a new crank and a rebore on my H1b before i discovered the problem. I found this by accident after disconnecting all 3 pump outlets and noticed the oil tank was emptying itself gradually from the rh outlet only!

Same happened on the H2 a few years later. At first as the o rings let by, a bit of extra smoke from the rh pot goes unnoticed but eventually it gets too bad.

The H1 left a smoke screen on the M1 during the 1st Rally ('kin years ago). The cops were going to do me for it but turned their attention to a bike that stopped to help for doing a u turn on the hard shoulder.

Thanks windy...the pump has not been touched for 20 years but have noticed more and more smoke in the last few years...i have not been back to the bike today..is it worth changing these "o rings or just swap round as you say?

If you can get them by all means, change them and definitely change them if they are perished or damaged (they look like a standard easy to get size).
