Damien has had a little makeover...

Post by h2chris »

A young Roger Ramm asked me about ignitions a while ago and I told him of a cheap but effective system using a KH250 rotor and windings (actually the whole assembly as it bolts straight on) that I had put together. The pick-ups are from a points replacement kit for a Mini car and then all you need are ignition coils suitable for use with points, a little bit of machining and a new back plate & magnetic trigger and the job's a good one! On the test rig I have it worked fine so Roger's bike is now the test bed.

Its such a rare bike, one of the 20 H1D"s imported that I thought it would be more valuable if I converted it back to a three cylinder :D
And Rog did say, give it a good trashing

Well said Rog. He either blows up your bike or nicks the best bits from it and flogs them on eBay.

I must confess that when at first I tried to start it, that I'd wired it wrong as it just spluttered & popped. It turned out that trailering it down here in torrential rain had allowed quite a bit of water into the carbs. Each one was stripped and all the jets and valves removed and given a good blow out with my airline.

I did have one scary moment when, as I removed the tiny spring clip that holds the fuel valve in place, it pinged off into the air at about 100mph! I never thought I would find it but within 20 secs of getting on the floor to look for it, I saw it underneath my bike ramp - how lucky was that! While I was at it, I also drained the tank of fuel and rinsed out with fresh. The fuel tap was given a good cleaning too. I kicked it over three times and although it was now trying to start, it didn't. So, I popped the plugs out and watched each one as I kicked it over by hand. All the plugs had a very weak spark. I then got a box of used plugs and went though them, one at a time until I had four plugs with four bright sparks. I put them back in and it started first kick!

Just out of interest, Dayle over in the USA (aka Starfire on the board) informed me that there was another way to do this. Rather than have four individual pick ups & coils, you could have just two pick ups at 90 degrees to each other and have TWO magnets on the rotor at 180 degrees to each other. Each pick up would fire a dual outlet ignition coil. One would go to fire cyls 1 & 4 and the other would fire cyls 2 & 3. You would of course have two wasted sparks but that is not an issue. Using this method you'd have to ensure that your crank was completely in phase and firing 1,3,4,2.

For those of you who don't go on the USA board, Dayle is a very experienced electronics engineer who has, over the last couple of years, spent hours developing replacement ignition systems for nearly all of the Triples. Everyone who has bought one of his units has said how well made & how well it works.

Chris, sorry if I'm being really thick here, but why would there be two wasted sparks on the system you describe.... :?: with two pick ups and a dual outlet ignition, surely there would be four sparks :?

(simple answer please, cos I'm a Norvern Luddite)

There are two firing triggers as well as the two pick ups, so there will then be four firings of the coils. But with them being "double ended" coils the plugs would be fired eight times. Four at the correct time and four as a wasted spark.

Thanks for all your effort and time mate. The wasted spark has to come at BDC. Chris spent ages working out the pick up and magnet layout to sort this system. Many thanks my friend. 666 Rog

Si, I'm not sure what you have or need so give me a call if you want any more info regarding the bits I use.

Rog,

it was fun trying to sort out our dilema as you know I like a challenge! Someone like Dayle would know what to do straight away but I like having to try & test stuff out, that's how you learn. For those of you that are interested, we found that using the 4x pick-up, 4x coil system, 1x magenet trigger was drawing too much current - not less than 7.8A. Setting it up with just 2x Duel coils, 2x pick-ups and 2x magnet triggers has resulted in a system that uses no more than 3.7A at any one time, leaving plenty of power in reserve to charge battery & run other stuff, etc.

Hopefully this will now mean that Rog can ride his bike without having to keep charging the battery! Happy riding, Rog!

If this means Rog has sufficient 'spark' to run other stuff maybe he could now fit a fag lighter

Could also fit a defribulator - wire yourself in on every ride then divert the spark if you have a heart attack on the ride
