I bought the best welding set I could buy twenty one years ago. It was a Kemppi PSS3500 Multisystem, meaning that it was a MIG, MMA and TIG unit all in one. The 350amp power source used state of the art inverter technology and only needed a 20amp 3 ph supply. The water cooling unit, TIG and MIG units were separate items. I bought all the accessories for it too, including a Pulse unit as well as a range of torches. As you can imagine, it was a lot of money at £11600 plus VAT. It was used everyday in my workshop on the job we bought it for and then when we lost the job, it just sat there, hardly being used for the next nineteen years.

Why have I told you all this you may ask? Well, we are planning to move next year to a much smaller place and so I won't have a three phase supply. I looked into replacing my superb but huge welding set with a smaller single phase unit. Today I had a demo of a Kemppi MasterTig 2300 AC/DC ACX. It was fantastic! I was welding 8mm thick ally plates together with no problem at all. This can be achieved by using much less power as it's so much more efficient. ) Here's a picture of the unit next to my old unit. It weighs just 15kg and it will run from a standard 16amp plug!!

I think I may have to buy it...

I think I remember paying summat like £3K for my first desk top, and had one of the first mobile phones provided from work, it cost £1250.00 but that must have been in about 1982/3 :?:and looked like this building block

Hi Jim,

luckily, there's a fabrication firm bnot far from here and he called in to see me a while back and mentioned he was on the look out for something like I had. He wanted a high powered, watercooled MIG unit for a continuing high volume job. My set was ideal and he's agreed to buy it for a pretty decent price.

I ordered the new set and I'll have it Friday morning.

If it wasn't for the fact that when we move I'll lose my 3 phase supply, I would not be selling it as it is a super machine.

I'm a welder in an oil fabrication yard 'up north' at the moment we are you using Lincoln suit cases and rectifiers they are solid and reliable enough but too heavy for hauling up and down scaffold it keeps you fit tho. The millar sets are even heavier I can hardly lift them with a full coil of wire on, I think it says everthing about the Yanks make'em big and heavy a bit like there cars !!!! Kempii are the dogs danglies top quality gear.

I already have a phase inverter for the machines that I'll keep but the big lathe I have and the big welder need lots of power and, like you said, the inverters to suit would be £££££'s.
