Whats that Lister ??!!
You question my wisdom ??!!!!!

I`m an " Expert" I`ll have you know.........................

Tell you what, its a 101% certain fact your card will work at a French supermarket EVERY time when there is an alternative fuel station open across the road, and you stopped to top up , just to be on thesafe side.
But on a Sunday, when the wole Country is shut , there`s no help around, and you have been on reserve for the last 30 miles ( or coz you forgot to switch it back onto main tank at last refill )
THEN , yes , THEN your card won`t work !!!

I had a similar situation to Gary C and Delboy one time riding another sort of Triple thru` Northern France. Eventually saw a hot French Chick on a 750 Honda stopping at one Supermarket site and nipped in ( after trying 3 previous stations with no card-joy )
She joked that it was a common problem and maybe her card wouldn`t work. ( It did, I had loads of cash , and paid her with Euros. )
But it WAS a real problem, and seems to still be ?

Convoys with a support Transit van with extra fuel . Thats the real answer !!

B.T.W. Somebody said 3-4 hours to Spa form Calais..??

Really ? I`d have thought nearer 6 ?

Calais to Spa is about 220 miles if I remember correctly, usually takes me about 6 hours in a big motorhome so 4 hours on a bike sounds reasonable with a few stops for fuel. Not had problems with the ever increasing card pay pumps except they only give limited amount of fuel, 120 euros worth, tops, no problem for a bike but I usually need ?200 plus and they won't let you use a card twice!!
Remember, Spa is a beautiful place, surrounded by forests, which grow so well cos it can rain like you can't believe! Waterproofs would be advisable!!!!!!

rotterdam europort to spar

taking the scenic route is only 165 miles and 5 hr 29 minutes

so we get off the ferry at 8/8.30 and have 10 hrs or so to take in the scenery and get lost
