WOW! I've Just Fitted Ivan's Carburetor Kit to my 72 H2!

I finally got around to fitting the Ivan's Performance Products Carburetor kit (that I purchased last November)to my H2 last week, and have been staggered by the way it has made my bike so much more enjoyable to ride! Ivan clearly spent a lot of time developing his product, and like he says on his website, being a 'jetting perfectionist' he was determined to fix the all of the carb problems associated with these bikes.

I can confirm that the annoying, bucking, pinging and poor part throttle response previously experienced on the standard jetting is gone and that the amount of vibration has also been reduced. In fact at lower rpm's it feels as smooth as my air-cooled 350 Yam!

I rode over to Paul Scanlon's work shop yesterday lunchtime and let him take my bog standard 72 H2 out for a blast! Paul came back smiling and was so impressed by the improvement that he is going to order a kit to use in his gorgeous H2B.

The kit supplied is pretty comprehensive with clear instructions for set up, and comes with new needle jets, jet needles with clips, a variety of main jets, and pilot jets to suit the air filter setup that you may be running.

For example it list's the recommended Main jet size for use with Stock Air Box and Stock Filter, Stock Air Box and K&N Filter, Stock Air Box with the Top Silencer(Snorkel)removed, and with Pod Filters.

Ivan has recently made jet kits for the H1 and S3 models and I look forward to buying a kit for my UK H1B after tracking down a set of 2.0 Throttle slides to use in conjunction with it.

Ivan is a busy guy, his core business is supplying tuning goodies for modern super-bikes, however, like us he loves classic strokers, and has experience with aircooled Yamaha's too. I found him very easy/helpful to talk to. As he is based in Congers, New York, I would recommend contacting him after 8pm UK time.

Interesting, it seems only the needles are 'special' along with some 'top tips' on set up.

If these really do what is claimed it looks value - but all those benefits by just new needles...

Just had a quote from the UK address £180 +P+P for a set.

Maybe cheaper to buy new set of carbs ??

Hey ho, I think that you guys maybe missing the point.

You're not just buying a set of new bespoke needle jets, the kit comes with new emulsion tubes, 6 different sets of main jets, and 3 different sets of pilot jets plus recommended spec's depending on what airbox and filter combination that you're using. In other words I can alter things if I want to try alternative parts etc.

I realise that you can buy a lot of stuff new elsewhere and some stuff NOS(at a price)! But this kit actually makes the bike work like Kawasaki never achieved back then.

I'd tried carefully setting up my carbs etc but a lot of the problems stemmed from the bike bike running way too lean a various throttle openings, and whist it was fun thrashing it, I soon got tired of all of the unpleasant traits when going on rideouts.

Now my H2 runs like it should, and I thought I'd share my findings with the Club.

At the end of the day, you pays your money and takes your choice. Rather than have an investment sitting in the corner of the garage because I can't be bothered to put up with it's temperamental running problems, I have a bloody superb rider that I can take out whenever I wish!

the other way of doing it is to get the required mikuni parts from Steve Doran@ Motocarb ltd ,then if you have to replace any more parts you will have a known size to work from.

yep, great idea if you know exactly what your problem is and exactly what you need to replace?
except the chances of the man in the street riding a h2 and diagnosing what carb part he needs to richen/lean to solve his problem are virtually nil

if you do know the sound of your bike 4 stoking or the sound of detonation then maybe you have a slim chance of getting it somewhere like

the feeling of a bike running rich and running lean can be exactly the same

Good Info Mart, I spoke with P.S. today and he was astounded at the difference that the kit made - to the extent that he orderd One straight away, he did tell me that the order wasn't quite straight forward and each bike has a different kit depending on the spec

Hmmm, I seemed to have opened up a bit of debate on this subject, so after reviewing what I've said I think I should clarify a few points....

Ivan has effectively altered the 'fueling'(to use modern day speak) by arriving at a 5 angle Jet needle that is very different to the stock Mikuni needles used in H2's. Apparently Ivan spent about one year developing them and his base settings by testing things out on his H2 and H2c. Hence I doubt that you will find a Mikuni Jet needle to do the same job...

So in my case, I have used his recommended 'base' settings and done the following;

1.Made sure my float levels are spot on at 25mm
2. Used the 37.5 Pilot Jets supplied(You can use these with Stock Airbox or Pod filters)
3. Used 105 Main jets as I'm running the stock Air Box and K&N Filter.(As an example if I was using pod filters I would use 115's)
4. Installed Ivan's Needles with the clips in the 3rd Groove.
5.Adjusted the Mixture Screw to 1.0 turn out from lightly seated.(range setting from 3/4 to 1.5 turns out)
6.Ensured that the Carb slide cutaways are 2.5(stock no mods) as this what Ivan used when developing his needles/settings.

As bikes do vary there are a couple of caveats;

Ivan's needles require slightly larger main jets than the stock needles and the main jet recommendations are the starting point.

He stipulates that you should use the smallest main jet that does not 'ping' when operating at prolonged full throttle. If you hear 'pinging/detonation at full throttle, then use a larger main jet etc.

There are other tuning tips too but i won't list everything as that's not the point of this thread.

Perhaps I should point out that as I've been running in new Wiseco's I haven't run my bike at full throttle yet(although with a bit of luck weather wise I should do this weekend!), however the kit comes with enough jets for me to go up a size should I need to.

I hope this additional info is useful in case anyone has any doubts about the merits of Ivan's Carburetor Tuning Kit Part number H2-7275

Kawasaki put in the 2.5 slide to help with fuel mileage. Usually a 2.0 slide will alleviate the surging problem. 2.0 slides are not to be found though. And modding 2.5's though simple, it is not easy.
