Just a quick one chaps...Whats the best sealant to use between crankcase halves ?

Any good automotive silicon sealant will suffice , dont use strong sealants as you will never get them apart again !

NO! wrong do not use silicone near petrol, use the proper thing ,3 bond Hylomar, NOT SILICONE!

used bathroom sealant on my KH400 about 6 yrs ago, still going strong

normally use blue hylomar or the grey stuff from simon

This is twice now you have come down heavy on Silicone for gaskets like it's the absolute worst thing to ever do to any engine, where do you get your information on there being a problem??

For years, home bike menders have used it in either proper gasket silicone or even bathroom stuff, if you google it.. race engine builders use it all the time, people have done comparisons between it and gasket cements, with peoples preference falling for either types, major manufacturers still sell it for engine sealant, I can find NO reference to there being ANY issues at all..

I'm sure if it caused half of the problems you imply, Holts, Loctite and any number of other manufacturers would have been sued into extinction by now and/or had it off the shelves in double quick time.

So hands up anyone who has had a problem caused by silicone used as engine gasket/sealant? (other than sqeegeed bits in the oil).

Oh and by the way Barrie, if I want to use it on my engine, whether it's a problem or not, it really is none of your fucking business.

silicone is perfect when used near oils,.but not with petrol which makes silicone react,try it for yourself,just put a hardened piece of the material in petrol.If you want to walk round with your head up your arse feel free to do so!

see wolfie, there is that silicon addiction again, we need to do some silicon intervention, sit you down in a room with all of us who care deeply about you and just explain the effects this has on your life, the reality of the damage that the indiscriminate use of bathroom sealant in your life, maybe we should drink some beer (not the point), the point is that you might be using recomended silicon gasket compounds to stick your engine halves together, um.....i forgot where i was going with this......um

oh yeah dont use it to line your Petrol tank, and for feck sake stop chewing lumps of it otherwise you will find yourself standing on a bridge of a container ship brandishing an AK47 and surrounded by the US Navy. And no one wants them in their lives

Mitsui, it dosent cope with the humidity in tropical climates, better use vegemite, or a beef derived extract.

think i probably need to go an lie down, just read my last 4 posts and am worried I am coming across as frivolous.

Yeah, my bath does that too. There`s this hole at one end near the botton. Heck of a difficlut getting enough water in to bate in, as it all keeps running out that wee hole.
I`ve heard it can be slowed down by placing a jar of Marmite over the hole. Then it only dribbles out. But I don`t have any Marmite. Would Bovril do ??
Barrie ?? Is Bovril ok for this application ???
